Ann: Hello Sue. How are your three children?
Sue: Fine. It's been a while since you last saw them. Do you know their ages?
Ann: Give me a hint.
Sue: The sum of their ages is the same as your sons age. And if you multiply their (the three children's) ages you get 36.
Ann: That knowledge is insufficient.
Sue: Oh yes and my oldest child is a girl.
Ann: Now I know their ages.

How old are Sue's children? :P

my theory:

6,3,2.

because it says that her oldest daughter ( the fact that she's a girl doesn't actually matter), is still only a child. so I chose the multipliers that way so the oldest kid is still only a child.

I've seen one that used the same type of logic. (I'm big on puzzles.)
But there is a flaw in this one that was not in the other one that I saw. It is conceivable that the the children are not twins but just born close enough that there age is the same during a few months of the year. One 6 year old could be older than the other one, so knowing that the oldest is a girl, does not necessarily eliminate the 1 6 6 answer.

But then the women wouldn't have needed the extra information since only 3 3 4 would add up to her son's age. Read more carefully.
