Yeah, in fact on Highway 234 I moved a lot of dirt with the S W Rogers company ON the development known as BULLRUN..just a slight jog from I-66...in Manassas..(Wait couple battles took place there too!) thats,IIRC in Prince William County..

You have Lee Highway (29) and the Battle for Leesburg Pike (Rt 7) (Hmm not a civil war historian), but I remember seeing a sign on Route 7 WEST of Tysons corner before entering Leesburg,(still in Fairfax County but before Loudon County) about the battle there..Maybe it was Leesburg Tavern?????

Yeah lots of sites to see up there...

Now down south in Virginia..." Appomattox".....

Again, I dont remember, but was amazed by the number of roadside signs, for those whom have lived or extensively traveled there can attest to, small brownish looking plaques/signs stating Historic Signifigance of an area or road, and during my stay mid 80's for 5 years or so say 86-91 era, many developers/conservationists/historians would want to have their say when someone would develop or attempt to develop an area.

I love History and hope you enjoy some of the sights and sounds...

Mt Vernon is south of Alexandria on , I believe, HWY 235 (Mt Vernon Highway) just north of Fort Belvoir

Send them out to Tyson's Corner. You will get a lot of extra time to do the things you want to do, if only because they'll be stuck in traffic no matter the time of day.

Unless you're the boss, in which case you keep them on a short leash and send them to Georgetown or Pentagon City.

Tired of ads?

Greetings Horsie.
Glad you could make it to this part of the world.

I could easily do a lunch. RR Building is two subway stops away.

Dec 6th looks doable right now, if it is afternoon or evening.

(In belated response to the DC Polymeet thread, Dec 14th also looks doable right now, if that is still on the table. Don't know if we can do it at my place - the house is still torn up from renovation.)

As for Civil War battlefields,

Gettysburg is probably the most interesting. It is two hours north by car.
Antietam is about an hour and a half NW, again by car. You may also want to stop at Harpers Ferry, site of John Brown's raid, on the same trip.
Manassas is the closest site. 45 min to an hour by car, depending on traffic. Also accessible by rail (Virginia Railway Express Manassas Line from Union Station or L'Enfant Plaza), but only on weekdays.
Fredericksburg is about an hour plus south of town by car (can be some nasty traffic). Also easily accessible by rail (Amtrak from Union Station).

I aint trying to be the guy whom tops all remarks..BUT..

I supplied trucks and operational oversight with the John Driggs Corporation with trucking when we did the Pentagon City..let me remember..

Hayes Street on one side..

Joy or Joyce Street on another..
(I remember looking at the Metro stop X-the street)

Ahh..I do love construction!!

Man that place was HUGE..send them their..then southbound 395 to Springfield Mall...then jump over to 495 inner loop to just past I-66 to Route 7 West and Tysons Corner..They used to have Hechts out their..

OT..instead of Tysons Corner..leave Springfield mall.and stay I-95 Southbound to just south of Little D.C. (Thats Dale City) to the Potomac Mills mall!

Thanks Dan..together we can free up Horsie..HEY..go 5.5 hours south Horsie to my homegrounds where Camp lejeune, largest Amphibious training base in world, home of the USMC and Ill show you a good time..nice homecooked meal and church services on Sunday!

Peace

Yeah, that's true. I remember the smallness of the meals over in Europe.

But I thought Australia had decently sized portions as well?

Anyway, get a medium size. Child size is just tiny .

Help yourself to an AD-FREE life

Some meals aren't meant to be finished. That's why you have doggy bags. Not having enough for dinner is a greater sin.

Btw, I nearly starved in Europe. It was much better in Italy than Germany, though. Maybe because I was always jacked on their espresso. The Czechs know how to lay out a good spread.

There is a flight that gives you 8 hours in Chicago but we're avoiding it.

I might have more flexibility If I have to come back stateside in the third week of January next year.

Yes well its actually the bars part which is most important to me because I am a bit of barfly, especially when travelling.

I'm talking about quiet respectable drinking establishments near the hotel, the kind with booths and say a TV above the bar playing sports, not hot throbbing places full of loose women and druggies where the drinks cost an arm and a leg.

Off the map to the north, but a very short cab ride away is Adams Morgan that has a strip of bars and restaurants. It has something for everybody. You can just walk along the strip and see what you like. Restaurant and bar district feel.

2 blocks north from the embassy on 17th street is a strip of bars and restaurants. Mostly gay. Neighborhoodish feel.

To the West of the embassy is DuPont Circle. Lots of bars and restaurants. Some are gay. Mix of professional and neighborhoodish.

South and Southwest of the embassy are a lot of hotel bars. Every hotel has one in any event. Professional and travelers.

Northeast and east of the embassy can get sketchy after about 13th street. Not much up there anyway.

Southeast of the embassy is an odd assortment. Chinatown is about 7 blocks away. Some professional. Some entertainment district. Some the convention crowd.

I'll think up some specific suggestions on bars.
