Landmass size for Barb spawn? Support Apolyton or Terrorists Win

Does anyone know how large the landmass needs to be to spawn barbs?

I'm playing a game with many small islands and haven't had any barbs spawn on them even though there are cities on them and no units are in the darkened areas where barbs could spawn.

I am not sure if they is a limit perse. You need to have a settlement and they must be out of the sight range of any combat units. I don't know if there are any other requirements.

Personally I switch down barbs for the huge amount they give to expansionist civs

Forget the what huts do for exp civs. You should see what barbs camps does for the AI on Demi. They make so much cash by smashing barb camps it is depressing.
