When do We Attack Catchopolis Support Apolyton, buy GURPS/ Alpha Centauri

Second MOW poll of the moment.

Basically, how much should we build up before we attack Catchopolis for real.

Please read all of the options before voting!

Basic options:

Option 1) We attack as soon as the reinforcements near the front reach it. This includes a couple MIs, a few Horsemen and a few Catapults. Total added forces: ~2 MIs, 3 Horsemen, 4 Catapults. We'll say this will take ~3 turns before we are able to attack Catchopolis.

Option 2) Wait for the first wave of reinforcements currently at home. This amounts to another couple MIs, Horsemen, NMs and possibly Catapults. Total added forces: ~4 MIs, 5 Horsemen, 4+ Catapults. ~7 turns.

Option 3) We build a new round of MIs in all of our military cities. This gives us the previous reinforcements plus another 4 or 5 MIs. Total added forces: ~8-9 MIs, 5+ Horsemen, 4+ Catapults. ~11 turns.

Option 4) Uber-assault. We build up the invincible wave of death to strike down GCA. Total added forces: 12+ MIs, 5+ Horsemen, 4+ Catapults. 14+ turns.

Got spare money?

I am in favor of doing the uber buildup, myself, or the 11 turn one at the very least.

We have a massive economic advantage and a lot of time to work with. They just got done upgrading a lot of Spearmen and are now down to only Catchopolis and BoP to build new 30 shield Pikes. Catchopolis is at 10 SPT and BoP is at 8 or so. We currently have 7 cities at 8 SPT or greater.

We still have a long time before we finish Invention and nothing pressing to deal with right now but the elimination of GCA. We should take time and make sure we do it right. If we botch up the main assault on Catchopolis then it will take far longer to finish them than if we build up properly now.

Put an end to popups!

I think Option 3 will suffice. However, I wonder how much WW will affect us if we keep posponing the death blow...

That said, under this circumstance, I do not see why we should gamble on trying to win quick when we will win in the long run. This isn't the PTWDG war where any side has a shot of victory and gambles must be taken.

Agreed. Do it right. Go for the slow buildup, unless a chance comes along to strike sooner. In the meantime, make their lives miserable by running through their lands with our present units.

Emphasis added by me. I am all for a slow, solid buildup - on condition that we wreak havoc in their homelands, crippling their already feeble production potential.

Use cats, use horses, use mercs and pillage, pillage, pillage. Our workers will redo the improvements fast once the war is over.

Keep in mind that for every pike they build, we will need 2-3 MIs of ours to kill it in Catcho. Our huge production potential fades a bit, if we consider that the defender needs less units to counter our offensive forces.

I am currently playing a very similar situation in my individual PBEM (ask Beta ). I'm left with just a single city (already been in that position about 20-30 turns ago, rebuilt back up to 4 cities, now I am down to the last stronghold again). And yet, I am still breathing. Defenders are favoured big time, let's keep that in mind.

Can we afford to fortify our army 1 turn, and use cats to bomb tile 4 of Catchapolis.
That will make their troop movements a little more difficult.

Do we have some mercs & a couple of cats that can go to tile 3,6 of Inevitable ?
They can then bomb tile 4 of Server Fire.
That will essentially cut off Server Fire and make it easy pickings.

Luckily he has iron

Which reminds me that maybe we could somehow definitely disconnect their iron ? I mean, fortifying 2 NM's on the mountain or something like this ...

Kill them, Kill them as soon as possible.

We should bring up the rest of the cats and pound them into the ground. We kill their barracks, We kill their Temple, we kill their Market. We do this over several turns of Cat Fire, then we kill them all!!

This poll did not inlcude "attack now"!?!

War Weariness is something that we have to consider. It has already appeared and it is something that grows as long as we are at war. I can see waiting for the seige at Catch for possibly 7 turns IF we take on BoP AND do some pillaging. We don't need to attack with Horses only at BoP.

CFC is likely beelining for BoP themselves. Will it be a race between us to get there?

14 turns or more... depend on our production edge. Build to overwhelming advantage, and keep out of harm's way until we are ready to deliver that death blow.

While I like all the pillaging / Cat ideas, I do NOT like the idea of putting forces at risk of seemingly invulnerable GCA Horsemen.

Back off, and then bring a gun to a knife fight.

You didn't answer the question in the poll E_T. We all want to kill them as soon as possible, the question is whether we attack yet or not.

Catapults and sieges are not as good as you make them out to be. As I said in my other post, under the current situation I get an average of 1 Catapult hit per 18 shots. That's simply not going to work. It would take just as long to build up a new army as it would for the siege to yield any results.
