HIV jumps in the US Support Apolyton, buy Civilization: The Boardgame

HIV rate jumps among US gays

There has been a big rise in the number of new HIV cases among gay men in the United States, a report says.

The latest report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention revealed a 17% increase in new HIV cases among gay men between 1999 and 2002.

The figures cover 29 US states - not including New York, California and Washington DC.

"The fight is as urgent as it was 20 years ago," CDC director of HIV/Aids prevention Robert Janssen said.

'Treatable disease'

CDC officials say the report shows there is a need for new prevention strategies.

Earlier this year, the centre launched a campaign urging safe sex and discouraging needle-sharing, but Mr Janssen said that "prevention fatigue" had probably set in as many now regard HIV/AIDS as a "treatable disease".

The report, released ahead of World Aids Day on 1 December showed that overall, the number of men diagnosed with HIV between 1999 and 2002 had risen from 17,556 in 1999 to 18,843.

The Hispanic community showed the largest increase in HIV cases, at 26%, while HIV among whites increased by 8%.

The report showed there was no considerable increase in infection rates among African and Asian Americans, but black people account for 55% of all new HIV cases.

Mr Janssen noted that while HIV largely remains a black and Latino infection in the United States, the report indicates that lifestyle is more of an issue than ethnicity.

The report also found that although the number of Aids cases had been on the decline, between 1999-2002, the number of cases increased by 5.1%.

It is estimated that there are between 850,000 and 950,000 HIV-positive people in the United States.

Put an end to popups!

Bush administration has been putting up a lot of sex-related misinformation on the official government websites. Of course, that's unlikely to be related to this.

Very dumb indeed. The drugs may make it less life threatening, but it definetly isn't something you want to get.

I have to admit that there are a lot of "adults" who need to grow up out of their perpetual adolscence and realize that they are not immune to HIV/AIDS just because they do not want to get it.

Full PM-box? Change here!

AIDS is about as treatable a disease as an uncurable cancer. Sure you can stall the effects of the disease for some time. But it is difficult, time- and energy-consuming, and it generally makes life much less enjoyable.

It's still a wonder to me why people can still continue to get AIDS in a modern country, where everybody knows how to avoid it

Simple.

It's been a generation since AIDS first emerged. A whole new generation of gays in late teen-years, who have the same delusions of invinsibility that all teenagers do.

There is no single, simple explanation for why there are some people who have not acknowledged the information that is out there about HIV/AIDS that can be transferred through unsafe sex, hazardous blood transfusions, and unsanitary needle use.

Actually for some time now there has been concern in the medical community over the increasing practice of "bare backing", i.e., anal sex without the use of condoms. As Boshko pointed out anti-retroviral therapy has made the disease seem less scary to many gays. There is also the problem that, let's face it, condoms decrease sexual pleasure for many people.

never said you did, but I'm saying it. Apparantly Reagan did not care about the AIDS epidemic. He didn't even say the words AIDS until like 1987.

He wasn't a very compassionate president.

But you have to remember that some of the political leaders in the gay community unwittingly played into the hands of this disease by crying out that regulations of bathouses was taking away their liberties.

There are several gruops of people that were in positions of responsibility during the early part of the crisis.

In the very beginning, the late 1970s and early 1980s there were many people in the medical research community who were concerned that announcing the existence of this disease would lead to cries of discrimination in the gay community and/or increased homophobia among non-gays. That's why you didn't hear anything about the existence of AIDS until the virus had already been identified, even though the researchers working with it obviously already knew that the disease existed. That the disease was primarily transmitted sexually was pretty much evident by a study of its epidemiology.

Yes, because it's easy to be ostracized because of claims of discrimination. The information may in fact have been totally ignored or declared bogus, even.

Many gay leaders believed that those at the Cancer Development Center and other scientists were part of a conspiracy to renew social persecution of all gays by trying to regulate, if not shut down, bathouses as a way to prevent the spread of this new, strange disease.

There were other gay leaders on the other side, who advocated that gays needed to renounce the lifestyles that encouraged unsafe sex in light of this new disease. The emergence of the AIDS crisis had created a split in gay communities across the nation.

Raegan and other conservative politicians were too-straight-laced, ignorant, homophobic, or morally presumptuous to confront this new crisis in spite of the information that the Center for Disease Control, and other organizations had compiled early on.

And then you had the hemophiliac organizations in which most of the members wanted to pull the wool over their eyes, rather than admit to their deadly vulenerability to HIV/AIDS. They just did not want to acknowledge that they were being stricken by this "faggot" disease.

And then of course, you had medical officials in many cities who were too ignorant or homophobic to help other medical officials who actually wanted to take measures to prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS.
