In the Catholic church, parents name their kids after saints. When there's no saint with the name you would like for your child, you give them the formal name of the saint most approximating what you plan on calling your new rugrat.

My parents wanted to name me Jack, but were "advised" by their priest that a child could not be baptized Catholic with that name, and that I should therefore be named John. As my father told me many times, "There ain't no Saint Jack, Jack."

So I went through my youth being called "John" at school and "Jack" at home and in the neighborhood...

(Sidebar: This also adds an air of irony to the title character of a Ben Gazzara movie a few years back.)

Now, -- why "John"? Just convention, I think. There are at least 6 St. Johns recognized by the church, so plenty to go around... I think if you'd check, you'd find a large proportion of John/Jacks are from a Catholic background.

We do? There's a Saint Sophia (I think), but I don't remember a St. Tiffany, which was the child baptised after Sophie.

I don't think it's church doogma, just tradition AFAIK.
I was baptized in the 50s, so much could have changed, too...
