Well, over the past year and a half I've worked with Togas as VP while he was FAM, SMC while he was VP, I appointed him as Chief Justice of the Court of Apolytonia when I was President, served under him as his Most Trusted Advisor, Lord Chamberlain, and Chief Ambassador on RP Team, served under him as Ambassador to CGN while he has been FAM here, and served as Consul while he remained FAM here. Given that I've seen him excel at ALL of those positions and I've found the experience of working with him to be quite rewarding because of his natural inclination for being a good team player (and he supported me running for Consul, too ), is there ANY chance that I could get away with NOT supporting him?
As for Togas' chief qualifications for the job, there's one that unquestionably sticks out and will require a little bit of history if you'll bear with me. Back when the SPDG was still relatively young, Togas was elected to his very first position here at Apolyton as the FAM of the SPDG. Now, up to that point, the ministers each ran their own ministry pretty much by themselves, occassionally with a single deputy who could stand in for them in the event of their absence. Togas was the first minister to put together an entire TEAM of hard working people all doing facets of the FAM job: researching from game data, researching game mechanics, checking the prices of everything with each AI player, etc. He successfully built up an entire team of people that he did an excellent job of both inspiring and managing. It is worth noting that this is where the now great E_T first got a job working in Apolyton demogames doing game research under Togas over a year ago, along with numerous others.
For the ISDG FAM, the fact that the game is multiplayer rather than singleplayer means that there is a rather significant difference in the work done by the team, but Togas' ability to put together a great team of people all motivated to do their jobs and functioning as a cohesive unit remains quite impressive. This is because, again, Togas has shown he is a very effective leader for inspiring and managing teams of people. There's damn good reason why those in the FAM here in the ISDG refer to it as the FAMily and it's because Togas has done such a tremendous job at inspiring and organizing the group to do their best work and to ensure that the left arm knows what the right arm is doing.
As for Togas' potential elevation to Consul and the impact on the FAM, I have no fear. Master Zen is an extremely capable diplomat, along with several others in the FAM team, and I have every confidence that the FAM team will continue to be highly successful... in large part because of all of the groundwork Togas has done to build that team and make it what it is today.
I've seen Togas at work as an executive as well and his ability to inspire and organize a group of ministers to work effectively together is equally impressive. I think this is because he's just a good team player... while he can certainly be decisive and make decisions when they are called for, he has always been someone who takes into very careful consideration the advice of his advisors, deputies, ministers, and the public in general. That's the main reason why I think he always surrounds himself with a group of advisors in the first place and also why those advisors remain motivated... he actually listens to them and seems to consider that there would be little purpose for them being there if he DIDN'T listen to them. People like leaders who listen to them.
As for Togas' interaction with the general posting population, I think his performance in a number of positions from FAM, VP, Constitutional Convention, Chief Justice of the Court, and leader of RP Team have all shown that he both listens to and respects popular sentiment just as he does the advice of his subordinates, though he certainly retains his own opinion of matters and does participate in the discussion with the team and calls things as he sees them. There's good reason why he has seemingly limitless support for the positions he holds even after holding them for only a brief period.
Now, in closing, I'd like to say that I have enormous respect for both Togas and Trip and I'd be quite happy to work with either of them as Consul. I seem to have agreed with Trip on a whole range of disputes where others disagreed with the two of us over the past two months or so, so I *know* I'll have little problem working with either of these fine citizens. I am *NOT* posting this as a Consul (and think anyone who would think so is positively silly), but rather as a friend. Read that as you may, since that obviously makes me both an obviously biased source and yet someone with some credibility when it comes to judging the man's character.
