The notion of 9/11 being preventable seems popular in certain circles. I think we should share the identity of the ideal preventer.

I don't think the hijackings were really preventable. That is, al Qaeda found a security hole (box cutters) and took advantage of it. Had we more Arabic translators working Intelligence, we might have been able to translate and recognize the coded warnings recived a few days beforehand. But, no, we're short on such translators (but apparantely not short enough to fire a good number of them if they're gay).

Now, whether or not the actual WTC/Pentagon attacks could have been averted is another question. Had aircraft been scrambled (and had we decoded the intercepted messages), a shoot-down order could have been given earlier and disaster possibly averted, for at least one of the towers.
