"That's not the point Shi. He was a policeman, he was addressing a citizen, I know that at least in Greece it's in the job description of policemen to address citizens as Sirs or Madams. I think that something similar must exist in the US?"

It's polite, and it is certainly helpful for getting cooperation. But I am pretty sure it is not an obligation, and Police Officers are often MUCH ruder and say MUCH worse things, and I am not aware of any job requirement to adress people as "Sir"

I suspect this is the case of the rich and powerful demanding to be treated with deference.

They do say worse things, we're talking about seeking the ideal.

Well if it's not an obligation then I guess all that's left is the cop/sherif making fun of that guy. That's not professional either.

And if that guy was giving him attitude he could cut his air so to speak in a proffessional way and not letting himself being exposed to this attack.

Damn, I agree with paiktis 100%. I'm getting scared.

But I must admit it's a lot nicer when I'm pulled over now and they call me MR. ******* instead of just saying "out of the car punk" which was more likely when I was younger.

Fair enough. But keep in mind, paitkis did say he thought getting the fired was too much, and the article mentioned that was that mayor was trying to have happen.

That mayor is one ****ed up *******.

You're trying to get a guy fired because he called you a "dude"? What's next? After this, will he can that secretary that didn't sit up straight? Or how about that police chief, he's always looking at him funny! You shouldn't look at good upstanding Christian citizens that way. (Of course, that implies he thinks that good upstanding Muslim citizens or what have you wouldn't be allowed this...but enough about his verbal foibles.)

IIRC, the Japanese Emperor before WWII was worshipped, and if you looked at him you supposedly went blind (well, I think the History Channel said that). Is this guy trying to bring back leader-worship or something?

Exactly, the police officer should have called him The Dude, his Dudeness, or Duder or El Duderino if he wasn't into the whole brevity thing.

Actually, I agree with Shi, though I will write a different letter. I think that if he's caught cheating on his wife, with an open beer in his car, then he really hurts Christian witness. Vindictiveness is just the icing on the cake.

If he's upbraiding the officer for not treating his superior with respect, I should think the mayor ought to be worthy of the respect. In this case, it seems the proper occasion to call him 'dude' when he's sloshed.

There is no improper time to call someone "dude". America is a free land, and our ancestors and our current relatives fought for the right to live without leader-worship. America's mayors, businessmen, etc. are normal human beings like all the rest of us.

@ Boshko

As a note, I have never seen a police officer addressing any civilian as "sir" or "madam" here. I think "citizen" is a good term to use.

In that case, I think "dude" is a good term to use for cops

Seriously, though - having a cop call you "citizen" is fairly patronizing, and smacks of authoritarianism, wouldn't you say?

Tired of ads?

This says it all:

Don't Call Me Dude Lyrics

Artist(Band):Scatterbrain

Here's my story, sad but true
About a girl that I once knew.
She broke my heart, I became unglued,
It all started when she called me dude

Well today I leave the psycho ward
Cause my sentence did conclude:
I had killed a man with my bare hands
Because he called me dude

The jury said that I was insane.
Temporally insane - brain strain.
But now the doctors say I'm A.O.K.
So I start my new life today.

This story starts some years ago
As I vacationed by the sea.
In the California sunshine
Just me & my baby.

I was in love feeling sky high
When a big blonde lifeguard walked by.
He looked at her, she looked at him -
I knew it was good bye.

He took her by the hand, kicked sand in my face.
She looked & laughed & said, "Later Dude!"
They were gone without a trace
And the waves echoed her laughter
And her words...Yo Later Dude.

Later that night I was in such a bad mood
Sittin' in a bar drinkin' hard, getting stewed
Thinkin' 'bout that girl & how 'bout I'd been screwed
When some guy walks in sits next to me & says
What's up dude!

I heard the word dude & I became unglued.
Slowly I turned, step by step, inch by inch
And put my hands around his neck, and I squeezed...

Don't call me dude!

So that's how I got where I am
But this ain't where it ends.
The doctors said they cured me
I said good bye to my crazy friends.

I was smiling as I left that place
My life had been renewed.
The guard at the gate, he stamped my pass
And he said, "Yo Later Dude!"

Slowly I turned...

ACK!
