Mayor Files Complaint After Being Called 'Dude'

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — Arvin Mayor Juan Olivares had just one request of a Kern County sheriff's deputy during a traffic stop — "Don't call me dude."

The mayor of the city of 20,000 people about 20 miles south of Bakersfield planned to file an official complaint with the sheriff's department, seeking to have the deputy fired for what he calls disrespectful behavior.

"I asked him five times, 'Please officer, don't call me dude.' I'm not a dude. I'm 41 years old, I'm a businessman, I'm a Christian and I consider myself a gentlemen," Olivares said Monday.

Olivares and Arvin City Councilwoman Carmen Acevedo were stopped by the deputy in Bakersfield on Nov. 23. Olivares, who was driving, said he was ticketed for having illegally tinted windows on his vehicle and Acevedo received a citation for having an open container of beer.

Olivares doesn't dispute the charges, but simply takes issue with being called dude.

"He was calling me dude and laughing about it," Olivares said. "I don't think Kern County needs that kind of leadership."

Both Olivares and Acevedo are due in traffic court December 17th.

Acevedo did not immediately return a telephone call seeking comment. A message left for Sgt. Chevy Garza, spokesman for the Kern County Sheriff's Department, also was not returned.

Just as people use "you guys" in a generic sense even when referring to other women. I have seen women say to other women, "do you guys want to go out?". That's always a bit weird.

Apparently this guy has been getting himself into a lot of trouble recently. I googled his name to try to find his e-mail adress to tell him what I thought about him trying to get this officer fired, and it seems recently two things have been happening. One, the City's police has recently has recently sued Arvin and Juan Olivares for Breach of Contract. Two, his wife recently filed a restraining order against him.

If you think it is unjust the idea of a man losing his job and facing the harshness of unemployment because he happened to adress one of the rich and powerful as "dude", I encourage you to e-mail him. Please do not not be rude or refer to "him" as dude yourself, as that will likely hardern his resolve to persecute this man. Instead, be courteous, and ask him to reconsider.

In all seriousness, policemen must address all citizens as Sirs or Madams (according to the preffered mode). Anything else is below job obligations. Although getting a cop fired for that is too much he can be repremented for it.

That's not the point Shi. He was a policeman, he was addressing a citizen, I know that at least in Greece it's in the job description of policemen to address citizens as Sirs or Madams. I think that something similar must exist in the US?

I agree that firing a cop for calling someone dude is going too far but he was obviously trying to do it for kicks or to offend while he was on duty, that's not acceptable. But, even, for whatever reason he did call him that, he was not proffessional. Again agreed about not firing him for that but he should be repremented.
