I've just ordered Multiplayer Gold but I didn't realize the CD will have to be in the drive when I play on the internet as you can play without it on the SP that I've got.
The problem is that I've got a laptop I want to play MP on but it has no CD drive, I've got a (slow) serial connection to my desktop to get the game across, is there anyway I can load the whole CD to the laptop HD and get the game to look for the files there instead of the CD? Like the assign command on the Amiga. e.g. Assign E: to C:
i.e. look in C: for any files meant to be on E
BTW any insominac UK Civvers fancy giving a beginner a good hiding?(MP virgin, SP Emperor Level)

I think when you do the initial install you have the option to do a "full install" which puts everything on your hard drive.

This is from a Mac perspective, but I'm sure that there is a PC equivalent. When you install, go to Custom Install and select the "Large Install". This installs 435 MB of Civ heaven, including Wonders movies; everything except the music. To quote the Info window: "but if you have 435 MB on your hard drive, you should probably call us and order more stuff!" I have the Large Install on my drive, and I never need the CD. I don't know if the standard install, 36 MB, would require the CD for MP. It does require the CD for movies and music.
Edit: Clarify that with the Large Install I never need the CD.

For those using WIN95 there is a registry entry that tells the game where the CD is located and if you change that to the Hard Drive then it will run everything from there. Right now I don't have the music on the hard drive but I'm working on a way to get that installed there also.
Ken
P.S. If there is an interest in the registry entry then I will look it up on my machine and post later.

Music has to be disabled otherwise it'll still want the cd but otherwise this is what u need. All it does is disables the need for the cd in the drive. I used it with my comp when my cd-rom was on the fritz and I know it works. http://www.people.unt.edu/~elzubeir/files/civ2crack.zip
