I just purchased C3C and I am interested only in a standard random map game. I am just curious if the game's current patch needs are severe enough to warrant waiting for the beta patch.

Depends if you can stand to wait or not. I know I couldn't.
There are very many vocal posters here who ARE waiting for the patch, and consider the game broken without it. However, there is certainly plenty to test out with the game as is. As it is, since the two biggest issues are corruption and the gpt bug, these do not feature much until you start to establish a sizeable empire around the Medieval era and other civs reach governments beyond Despotism, that allow got to become an option. Thus you can certainly safely play the Ancient Era with very little sight of these concerns, and even part of the Medieval Era. Civs like the Inca, Mayans and Sumerians have early UUs, so you could test these out to your heart's content with no effect from the changes to corruption.
I say test it out, but then I am in a minority and rather happy with the game as is. Patches are welcome, but not necessary to get enjoyment out of it, IMO.

I for one would start with those Conquests where the 2 important bugs (Fp & gpt) don't hurt - Mesopotamia (FP possible, but not needed), Mesoamerica (no FP at all), Sengoku (ok, gpt hits here), and the tutorials. Even if your main interest is the epic game, you can test the new features like traits, SGLs, Armies here.
By the time you're done with them, the beta patch should be out easily.
If you insist on random game only, I wouldn't start anything above Monarch/ Standard size. And even then, the bugs do hurt the AI as well, so things are rather screwed.

Blackwulf: get going! The game's terrific as far as I'm concerned. There may be a few things in there that bother some but not me. There's so much to play around with, whether it's the new stuff in the normal game or all the new Conquest scenarios, you'll have plenty to do and plenty of fun until the real patch comes in January.
If you have the game, why wait?

I have now played exactly one epic game into the modern era, as far as Synth Fiber.
I chose not to build an FP.
It's broken in terms of corruption... in a way, I enjoyed the challenge, but just for this one game. I've used 'food power' to address the problem: Aside from my core (12 cities?), I've got an extended portion of my empire that I keep at 7 pop, and continually draft and disband... a LOT of cities, maybe 15, and I'd prefer to expand further, but it's just not worth it. I've been taking these cities through: Temple, Walls, Barracks, Harbor, Market, Courthouse, Police Station, Civil Defense, Airport... all using disbanding when any of them hits 8 pop... it works, but it's boring and laborious. Even when I get all of that done, those cities are mostly cr*p, and they shouldn't be.

I too have played exactly one epic game (space race victory on Emp, yay for me) and the corruption was indead insane, I built the FP though... Donīt know if I benefited so much from it... at least the city I bulit it became very lucrative, my highest production city ... but most of my empire was made up by big cities with a lot of specialists

i got a SGL once so far, after discovering invention iirc.. isnt the SGL % cumulative with every tech you discover first? if so I was very lucky because that was the first tech that I discovered first afaik.
as for corruption, i don't think its that bad, although i havent played a game yet where i needed to build a FP.
all in all though, the game is very playable imo, especially the conquest scenarios anyway
