	What's the airspeed record for a helicopter Support Apolyton, buy Galactic Civilizations: Deluxe Edition

My Google search for "helicopter" + "airspeed record" didn't yield any immediate results.

Seriously, there is a reason for designing a craft like the Osprey in the first place. Helicopers are not an efficient design for traveling at high speeds. Too much of the energy of the engine goes into propelling the helicopter upwards. The Osprey's design allows it to turn into essentially a propeller driven airplane once it is in the air, potentially a much faster vehicle. This allows, for example, a assualt by air from Marines to arrive at their target from launch more quickly, and also to potentially be lauched from further away from land, a very important feature as ground to sea missiles get more dangerous and effective. There have been problems getting the design to work properly, but their are traits behind the design that give the military a sound reason to still pursue it.

because the boosters are not strong enough to lift something large...? or they can be strong enough if we make them larger but that further increases the weight of the planes requiring even stronger boosters...?

Third one down.

A specially prepared Lynx clocked 249mph. AFAIK it was used to prove the development of swept tip rotor blades.

I have a recollection of reading about a Lockheed special back in the 60's which had two jet engines bolted to it and set a record but whether that actually qualified as a helicopter I'm not sure.

Other than that the Soviet Union usually tried for such records. I'm sure Serb will be along sometime soon to claim the SU had the world's fastest helicopter.

IIRC Osprey is technically VTOL, and so it doesn't qualify as a helicopter for such records. AFAIK Ceberus is right.
