OPEC Wants Aid

An excerpt

Delegates said that Saudi Arabia, the world's biggest oil exporter, wanted promises of aid if Kyoto spurs a shift to renewable energies like tidal, solar or wind energy at the expense of fossil fuels.

They should've started shifting their economies earlier.

Btw, I don't believe there will be a shift to renewables.

And, there still is a market for oil in the plastics and chemical industries.

Sure they can have aid - AFTER they have spent the billions they have made selling oil over the last 50 years. When they are as "poor" as countries like Ethiopia and Mozambique they can have aid.

The should look at Brunei, they've spent the last ten years using the money to diversify and educate, not buy fancy fighters and palaces.

Put an end to popups!

I don't know. There economies are based largely on oil, and so if they lose that, they may be some of the poorest nations. I believe in voluntary aid to poor nations. Now, there are many extremely poor nations in the world, so they may still be rich enough to not warrent aid, but [b]if[/i] they do become an extremely poor nation, why not give them aid?

Sure, it's a bit much that they're asking for a guarentee, but if they're poor, then maybe they need some aid. It would have to be tied to their non-support of terrorism and removal of strict religious laws, IMHO, but if they do that, and are in need of aid, I don't see why they're any less entitled to it than other nations we give aid to.

Avatar Enlargement: We've got the solution

I agree with Seeker. If other countries are poorer, give aid to them instead. However if OPEC becomes extremely poor, on a par with some African nations, then it deserves it as much as those African nations.

did you not see what I said about investing.

Yes they will be poor if they squander all that money, but if they are smart, they will invest that money. I refuse to reward stupidity. I'd rather give the money to african nations who never had any capital to invest in the first place.

Tell them to start saving their money.

Did anyone read the National Geographic article about two months ago about how the majority of domestic born Saudi post college graduates don't have jobs? And not because they're necessarily rich, but because they all went to college and received religious degrees? It said that most of the manpower in the country is from foreigners who either travel into the country to perform their jobs or from foreigners who have moved to the country after being offered nice employment deals? I mean cmon, if they have any reasonable expectations of surviving after the oil market dries up they have to start building some sort of educational infrastructure.

What kind of jerks would ask for aid from the rest of the world after having so much? There are a few billion people in the world who would kill to live like they do.

Greedy and lazy.
