The idea that being a patriotic American means welcoming immigrants whole heartedly is a farce, and it has always been. We have nothing against immigrants, we have a problem with excess and mostly illegal immigration. A nation state can only expect to absorb a certain about of differance in any period of time. However, if a group immigrates to a nation they should be prepared to adopt a semblance of that nations culture, and I am not speaking of any individual on this forum in particular. America wants you to cetebrate your heretage, but within our own framework. So when people come here and do not bother to learn English, sometimes we get annoyed when we have to change our established norms to deal with newcomers. It isn't an American phenomenon, look at the Turks in Germany.
In other words, it is the responsibility of both parties to absorb each other but most of it rests on the immigrant. Unfortunetly alot of groups here do not wish to compromise, but rebuild their native world here. And these MINORITY groups have a louder voice than the larger immigrant population as a whole. We are a nation state, and because of this we rely on all members to share certain norms of belief and action. Personally, I think requiring English is not too much to ask.

The interesting thing is that there are so many different definitions. I have checked 'nationalism' in Oxford dictionary, two encyclopaedias (in English), two dictionaries in Croatian, and one dictionary web site (in English).
No two definitions were the same, and some were quite different. Add defintions of 'patriotism' and 'chauvinism' to the mix and confusion is what you get. That is why together with abortion, existance of God and gun control, 'nationalism' is one of those eternal topics and all because everybody has their own definition.

nationalism is a good thing
it is what enables us (the people of the nation) deal with those who want to take advantage of us
like corporations (in modern times) or terrorists or dictators
I mean, if there was no nationalism (and no nations), there would just be us (The People) getting taken advantage of
