	Where's all the spam gone? Remove this text

I used to get roughly 20-30 junk e-mails per day in hotmail until last week. 3-4 offers every day of where I could download the Paris Hilton video. Then, all of a sudden it stopped.

My junk e-mail box is now getting on average one junk-email a day. That's it. I don't want to jump to any conclusions yet but I'm considering removing my spam filter for the first time in two years.

Has anyone else experienced the same massive fall-off in spam. If so, what's behind it? Not that I'm complaining.

Yes! I've seen exactly the same thing. This morning I left with one spam in my inbox. When I came home it was still sat there all alone. Its barely worth clicking to delete them these days

I have been wondering the exact same thing. Over the past week or so, the amount of junk mail I receive has dwindled to almost nothing. I read they arrested a man in the US about a week ago for spamming mailboxes on a very large scale, I remember some "experts" estimating he was behind as much as 1 in 8 junk mails worldwide. I think there's a connection, they may finally have gotten to the root of the problem, at the very least the other large scale spammers are probably laying low for the time being.

Yeah, weird isn't it. Only one or so a day actually makes it to my inbox (I've got a Bayesian spam filter), but the junk folder is empty.

I don't get email spam anymore, just litteraly hundreds of add popups per day from programs hidden in things I download, who then hide themselves on my hard drive. That has to be illegal.

No, it's not. You can get this kind of spyware from two major sources:

(1) Bundled downloads
Adware/spyware included in a popular freeware client such as KaZaA.
-It's completely legal, especially if it's listed as being included in any of the documentation that comes with the application.
-It's a "gray area" if it's not listed in the documentation...perhaps a more intelligent legal expert could show us the light?
(2) Driveby downloads
Adware/spyware in an ActiveX download in a pop-up advertisement in Internet Explorer.
-It's completely legal either way, it prompts you to download something and you accept or decline. It isn't their fault if you don't read disclaimers, privacy statements, etc., and still click "Yes".
-It's also completely legal if you have IE fixed to allow all ActiveX downloads. This amounts to (duh) allowing ALL downloads, no matter what their content.

Companies that make adware and spyware are awful scumbags, but you can't blame them for negligence on the part of the end-user.

I've noticed the same thing! I was almost disappointed to get so little mail in the past days. Made me feel so unimportant.
It's a great thing, I wonder why there's nothing in the news. This should be something worthy to report I guess.

This all seems to be confined to users of Hotmail. I see no drop and spam our junk e-mails.

After the number of people with the so-big virus declined, so did my spam. This accompanied with government crack downs, a firewall, a spam filter, and a refusal to accept offers /news etc from most sites.

I now honestly only get maybe one spam message every 2 weeks.

I am less impressed with AOL on this (I like the pop-up blocker). How difficult is it to understand that emails with "Viagra" or "increase your size" in the title are spam? So much for AOL blocking spam.

To be fair I don't see the ones they do block but getting any is irritating.
