Do you envy others Christmas? Avatar Enlargement: We've got the solution

Well.. it's one of those threads by me again, so skip if you don't want to hear complaining .

I just can't sleep right now, because I Christmas. Not the day itself I guess, but what it reminds me. You see, we used to have these big christmas parties every year with the family and relatives. It was always great and I always looked forward to it, even when I was 18. First, it was about the presents when I was a kid, then when I started getting crappy presents after not being a little kid anymore, it was even better because of the good food and enjoyable day and evening with the family and relatives. Good times. Peaceful, no stress, everyone relaxed and talking, smiling.. I can't remember single fight in any parties..

Then.. it kind of started going to decline. My aunts divorced their husbands, one by one. That created a little minus to the spirit, because it wasn't the same anymore. But it was still ok. There was still good food, and some of us left. Hey, more ham for me, can't be too bad!

Then, I noticed that there is always this *****, who created tension. Nothing too big, but little. She is not our family or relative, but we keep inviting her because she doesn't have anywhere else to go in christmas.. She has relatives, but somehow she doesn't go there. Let me say this much, I don't wonder why, she's a major *****. I don't feel bad saying it either. When I was a kid, she never gave me a present, a card, or merry christmas welcoming. To this day, she refuses to talk to me because she doesn't like me. Ok, I leave her alone. But she's like this with everyone, except the few ones she knows and the reason she is there. Well wake up, it's oru family christmas, so if you hate the rest of us, get the hell out if it means being a major pain in the butt, and frankly hostile against all of us.

Well, now that my parents got divorced, there is not a single person that is married in our family anymore. I'd laugh, but it's not very funny I think.. grandpa would be, but grandma passed away so.. but let's say everyone has noticed, that the christmas party is just what it used to be. There are no kids anymore, we have all grown up. Most refuses to sing christmas songs too. There is no atmosphere.

So what if the party sucks, it's all about the family.. but when that is broken too, well it's just me and my dad, with no christmas food, and no presents. Well, I can't afford buying even cards, let alone small presents. My dad doesn't know how to do that. But I don't blame him, I know it's uncomfortable to him anyway. So, what do we do? We don't talk about it, we all know it sucks major ass, and we check out tv for an hour or two and that's it, business as usual. It's a HUGE decline from the once big family parties that everyone enjoyed.

I envy all the people who can have nice christmas, because I hate christmas these days. I know it beats the christmas for the ones who don't have a roof on their heads or are dying in deceases and things like that.. but still.

So, after this long whining, what do you do? I mean the ones that are in the same kind of situation? I'm thinking of doing something, because I don't want to wait for 30 years when I have own kids and my cousins have kids so we can have a family party once again like we used to. What can you do by yourself? I was thinking of going to church, but what else there is?

My friend and his family are pretty isolated from their brethren, since his parents originated in the Boston area and moved to the Chicago area, and so their (extremely large) families all celebrate various holidays in the Boston area while my friend and his family are by themselves in the Chicago area. There are about 10 other families in the area who are in similar situations (either from divorces, or distance, or whatever), and so all of the families get together for their holidays. I participated in Thanksgiving with them recently, and it went off quite well.

Other than that, I can't really relate. My parents both come from moderately-sized (five siblings), disparate families, and so my parents and my brother and I have always celebrated holidays by ourselves (and have actually kind of dreaded having relatives invite us over for holidays or having them invite themselves over, because we don't really dislike them, we'd just rather avoid them). Now that my brother's married it's just added one more family member to the clique.

Yeah, like the outcasts party!

Well it sucks enough for the bigger family party to go down, but it sucks even more that there is no family christmas either.. I mean, last christmas I spent completely alone, but I was lucky enough that my friends came for the night and brought me food and we got wasted and it was good... but this time they're not coming, it was kind of expeptional time. It sucks so bad man.. I mean there are tons of people who have to spend alone, but I think it's even worse after knowing the good parties, and then suddenly there is nothing anymore. It's like being rich first and then poor, compared to just being always poor.

It also shows, that you know if something would happen or things like that, there is no 'family' you can rely on. I can rely on my dad, but hey after he's gone, that's ****ing it. Only door I can rely on opening is the overnight jail if I misbehave. And I try to be a trooper, I try real hard to just not think about it like 'next year it will be better' but who am I kidding? I need kids and stuff to have family parties again, and that'll take a long time. So, I know the next christmas will suck equally as much, so I hate it. The only reason I don't go to bar is because I don't want to on christmas, and because I'd prolly start trouble.

Well it sucks enough for the bigger family party to go down, but it sucks even more that there is no family christmas either..

That depends, doesn't it? I'm tired of the ackwardness of singing and dancing around a tree and I'm tired of faking religousness that doesn't apply to any one of us in the remaining 364 days. So this year I decided not to celebrate anything with anybody. It saves time and money, eliminates the choice between divorced parents and spares me from going back home by overcrowded trains.

we still exchange presents. But it just doesn't have the same excitement as being a kid and getting presents.

I make plenty of money. I could just buy this crap myself if I wanted to.

It it nice to get some of my family together. But usually one or two of us are working on christmas (both me and my middle brother are working christmas day).

That's what I have been doing the last ten years. Either I am alone on christmas or I have a few good friends here to get drunk with. Much better than family christmas!

I'm doing absolutely nothing this year. I could go to my wife's cousin's place, but I really don't want to and my wife is working Xmas day. Given that the rest of the family is spread out over three continents, a family gathering is out of the question.

Beer and TV for me.

I thought my christmas was going to suck this year too, but this evening i went for a walk and saw a tramp i used to talk to literally lying in the gutter. My life my be **** at the minute and yes, christmas day will be either vvv lonely or full of arguments. But at least i have a home and can drink alcohol to relax rather than because of an addiction. Sorry to preach to you all, but im really not in the mood for self pity.

You brought tears to my eyes pekka. I think I know the feelings. My family is far away from me on the other side of the ocean. I have a sister who is in the US but we are too farway to be together.

Do you have a close friend who can spend the Christmas with you? I still remember 5 years ago when I walked in the white snow with my friend, the night was quiet and pure, the candle light in the church, the crispy wind, the nice pictures that everybody's happy with their families ...

I love christmas. Christmas eve, I have dinner with one side of the family, which will be a delicious meal with all of one side of the family, and then christmas day, we will travel to new york city, to celbrate with the other half of the family. And another delicious dinner. No worries in the world, presents galore, and everything's going swell.

I've even gotten alot of presents for people. I can afford it... I guess.

The only divorce in the family that I can think of is my dad's parents, who got divorced years ago. None of my uncles or aunts are divorced, and neither are my parents.

I guess we all just got lucky.

It's nine in the morning here and I'm currently listening to Bathory - "Nordland" (awesome CD if you like "viking metal"), enjoying a cold christmas beer and waiting for the bathtub to fill up for a nice warm christmas bath. My fridge is loaded with food and beer. Good times!

I got my first present!!!! From the cops I just got back from getting some cigarettes from gas station, and cops pulled me to give me a breathalizer test. Naturally I passed it, but I didn't have my drivers license with me, and no ID, so he started giving me a ticket about it, and I asked if he'd have some christmas spirit left after all the domestic disturbance calls I'm sure he got.. because mine was an accident and wasn't that big.. so he thought for a moment and said 'drive carefully, merry christmas' and waived at me. That was kind of nice . That was the second time in a row I have spoke myself out of getting ticketed for obvious traffic violation .

Yeah it's kind of dark humor that only present is not getting ticketed by the cops, but hey, it was pretty cool! . Law inforcement loves me. After all, I am a Supercitizen.. if it was anyone else.. they'd gone JAIL FOR IT!
