The reason Murad and James banned smoking has little to do with smoke, and everything to do with smoking clubs. You see, when you got together with friends for a smoke, eventually people would start talking. Then, as now, many people's onversations revolved around the still widely held theory that the government sux. However, unlike now, at that time, people were more inclined to act upon it. James' son and both Murad's brothers were killed by their people. If those are the results, you'd want to stop people from talking too.
