Looking at this image, can anyone tell me what's ironic here?

I'm gonna just blatantly guess that the year in-game is also out-of-game accurate/correct?

I always try to get the best out of my terrain, even if that means gaps btween cities. I prefer to place a city on an empty grassland to get that immediate extra shield, to try and get that whale when my city expands. Sometimes it's a tradeoff - do I get that wheat or place the city on the river for that extra food and commerce? Do I move one more tile so two cities can have cattle instead of just one?

If I may whip out my English teacher credentials:
Irony is NOT what most people intend the word to mean - most people mean "coincidental" or "improbable" when they say something is "ironic."
For something to be ironic, it is sharply in contrast to what is intended or expected.
For example, a brilliant thinker who falls into madness is ironic.
Ending up marrying the girl you hated in 8th grade and swore you'd never talk to again is ironic.
Meeting someone you went to college with after 20 years is NOT ironic.
And, uh.... building a crusader in your civ game precisely around the era of the Crusades in the real world - while a very spiffy and commendable coincidence - is, er, not at all ironic.
So if you look at the song by Alanis:
Rain on your wedding day is ironic only if you expected sunshine - which you probably would, I suppose.
A free ride when you've already paid is ironic.
Good advice that you just didn't take might be ironic if the speaker intended you to take it - which they probably did.
Mr.Play-It-Safe's plane crashing is NOT ironic, however, since his intention in avoiding flying was to avoid exactly that, and the plane crashing was exactly what he WAS expecting - it was just a really lousy coincidence.
A "no smoking sign" on your cigarette break is certainly ironic.
A traffic jam when you're already late is absolutely not ironic - you're already late, so this does nothing to change your expectation of being late, nor your intention of not being late (since you already are.)
:: puts away his teacher's robe::
Sorry, you get like that after the winter holiday without students.
Class dismissed.
