No Shoes, No shirt... no shoes? Support Apolyton, buy Galactic Civilizations: Deluxe Edition

Is it just because of possible liabilities should a barefoot person step on some hazard that stores started doing this? I can't see people who go barefoot being a health hazard in public places.

What really started it all?

People have grody-ass feet sometimes. It's also because of disgust factor to other customers. I'd rather not see some guy's feet while eating.

Yep. they could step on something and have to go to the hospital, and the company would be liable. Also it's unappealing to most customers.
And someone could have a contagious foot disease that would be contracted by other barefoot people.

And to anyone listening: No shoes applies to your kids, too. Just because, "they're just kids", doesn't mean they can't step on something, and it also means that you're an idiot if you bring them in a restaurant barefoot. And 'no shirt' applies to shirts hanging open in the front, and there's no rule saying 'no pants' because at the time lawmakers didn't think fashion trends would get to the moronic point of otherwise sane people walking around with their pants around their knees. So pull up yer pants, button yer shirt, put some shoes on yer brats, and rejoin civilization.

McDonalds burgers are the most digusting of the major fast food joints. Never eat them.

It's a Burger King. Several, actually.

And large corporations tend to minimize any possible instance wherein they can be sued. Few people will sue a mom-n-pop joint. Anyone who scuffs their shoes in a multi-million dollar company starts seeing signs.
