I do not know if this has been mentioned before, but I noticed that is is possible to keep building obsolete units while playing my latest game. For example, as long as no changes are made to what kind of unit is being built by a city, it can keep building that kind of unit even after it has become obsolete.
Being able to do this may have more than just nostalgic value if Leonardo's has been built. For example, even after the discovery of Gunpowder, a city putting out 10 shields could keep building warriors every turn, which will be updated by the wonder into musketeers. The key is for the city to be building a warrior on the turn Gunpowder is discovered, and to NOT change what it builds afterwards. I can imagine that a 20 shield city would work nicely with horsemen, too, allowing cheaper production of knights, etc.
I haven't tested this, but I think cities that are able to do this must be founded AFTER the city that builds Leonardo's.

This used to be a staple technique for me. I don't think it depends on the date of city-building; I think all of your cities can do it, so long as they were building that kind of unit when the unit became obsolete and they don't change to building anything else. Can't go back.

DaveV,
Thanks for your reply. I just tested this and your recollection is confirmed. Feudalism causes the automatic upgrade, by supplying the missing link in the upgrade chain.

Right. That's why I don't do this much anymore, because I've come to like Sun Tzu better.

Let's just say he does not seem to have played a lot of Conquest or Leo's Upgrade lately... nor have I...

It's all in good fun. Like all God's creatures, old MP players deserve our consideration and respect.
(p.s. See the new MP strategy guide in that forum)

Rah,
Sparse?
By necessity, I’m afraid.
(sighs)
Oh feckless MP warrior, let me try to explain:
Your MPer is like a mighty lion, King, nay even Emperor, of the Civ II jungle.
Does he creep, slither, or spin cunning webs to ensnare his enemies?
No, he boldly struts to and fro, emitting powerful roars, challenging any and all within his domain. Blessed by a mind undistracted by strategic thoughts, he can attack quickly and with precise force, pouncing on unsuspecting newbies before they have time to react.
When one of these magnificent beasts approaches, can its aggression be dissauded by trade agreements, offers of assistance, overtures of peace, or by rational and intelligent discussions?
Never! We can only shiver and tremble like mice, and hide under a bush. When a vet MPer appears upon the horizon, all we can do is just cower, wait, and hope it goes away!
So, there it is in a nutshell. Seems obvious now, doesn’t it?

That was a good article, and is a testament to the depth of this game. Many "discoveries" are just re-discoveries, but there still is a lot going on recently that is really new, giving the game addtional leases on its long life.
Thanks to TCO for pointing it out.

Back in 1999, the OCC record was 1863. What is it now?

With Samson's great random start using a small map, Ribannah managed something like 415 AD.
With my custom "river" map and with the scenario option turned on to allow spaceshipo construction, I managed 25 BC.
With that same map, but starting with some extra engineers and spies, Ribannah landed sometime before 500 BC.
