"Breathe In"

i want you to see me out
you know you're bringing yourself down
and i drink too much and
you sing too much
and i think you know it
i want to see you out
you've got no inspiration
to do anything at all

hey when i go out
do i look like you do
hey when i go on
do i look like you do
marigold mary goes
you gotta come out so we can see you

we think we bring you down
you're not alone in that
you're not the first
and i think you know it

i want you to see you were right
about inspiration and everything else
but you said it wrong
hey look in the mirror
it's not what you say
it's how you say it.

Jawbreaker
"Untitled"
You can't sell me incense
My world smells good enough to eat
So let's not eat, just smell the good and longing
Not owning
We'll circle like insects
Incensing the grieve liquored herd
Have you heard an encouraging word from them
They pretend

To be so above it all
Or so they would have you think
I think, no one thinks at all

You might show some interest
You're world looks good enough to eat
I see he ghost of a better world
Living in the disbelief in ghosts
Everyone tells me they're crazy
Well crazy people aren't so ****ing boring
Wake me when your through being cool, cause I'm snoring
And hoping

To see you beside yourself
Show me the rose stuff of you
Would you
Do it for yourself

Or for me
We both need a change
Your fear or normalcy is hardly strange
Let's be freaks, plain clothes police
Let's be deliberate, because it's obvious to me
Weird is pretty obvious

So color me obvious
I just want to be happy half the time
And blue only when I have the time

This is the day
Of the expanding man
That shape is my shade
There where I used to stand
It seems like only yesterday
I gazed through the glass
At ramblers
Wild gamblers
That's all in the past

You call me a fool
You say it's a crazy scheme
This one's for real
I already bought the dream
So useless to ask me why
Throw a kiss and say goodbye
I'll make it this time
I'm ready to cross that fine line

CHORUS:
I'll learn to work the saxophone
I'll play just what I feel
Drink Scotch whisky all night long
And die behind the wheel
They got a name for the winners in the world
I want a name when I lose
They call Alabama the Crimson Tide
Call me Deacon Blues

My back to the wall
A victim of laughing chance
This is for me
The essence of true romance
Sharing the things we know and love
With those of my kind
Libations
Sensations
That stagger the mind

I crawl like a viper
Through these suburban streets
Make love to these women
Languid and bittersweet
I'll rise when the sun goes down
Cover every game in town
A world of my own
I'll make it my home sweet home

CHORUS

This is the night
Of the expanding the man
I take one last drag
As I approach the stand
I cried when I wrote this song
Sue me if I play too long
This brother is free
I'll be what I want to be

Townes Van Zandt
Wreck on the Highway

Who did you say it was brother?
Who was it fell by the way?
When whiskey and blood run together
Did you hear anyone pray?
I didn't hear nobody pray, dear brother
I didn't hear nobody pray
I heard the crash on the highway
But, I didn't hear nobody pray.

When I hear the crash on the highway
I knew waht it was from the start
I went to the scene of destruction
And a picture was stamped on my heart.

There was whiskey and blood all together
Mixed with glass where they lay
Death played her hand in destruction
But I didn't hear nobody pray.

I wish I could change this sad story
That I am now telling you
But there is no way I can change it
For somebody's life is now through.

Their soul has been called by the Master
They died in a crash on the way
And I heard the groans of the dying
But, I didn't hear nobody pray.

The Clash
White Man in Hammersmith Palais

Midnight to six man
For the first time from Jamaica
Dillinger and Leroy Smart
Delroy Wilson, your cool operator

Ken Boothe for UK pop reggae
With backing bands sound systems
And if they've got anything to say
There's many black ears here to listen

But it was Four Tops all night with encores from stage right
Charging from the bass knives to the treble
But onstage they ain't got no roots rock rebel
Onstage they ain't got no...roots rock rebel

Dress back jump back this is a bluebeat attack
'Cos it won't get you anywhere
Fooling with your guns
The British Army is waiting out there
An' it weighs fifteen hundred tons

White youth, black youth
Better find another solution
Why not phone up Robin Hood
And ask him for some wealth distribution

Punk rockers in the UK
They won't notice anyway
They're all too busy fighting
For a good place under the lighting

The new groups are not concerned
With what there is to be learned
They got Burton suits, ha you think it's funny
Turning rebellion into money

All over people changing their votes
Along with their overcoats
If Adolf Hitler flew in today
They'd send a limousine anyway

I'm the all night drug-prowling wolf
Who looks so sick in the sun
I'm the white man in the Palais
Just lookin' for fun

I'm only
Looking for fun

Forgive me; it's been four years, and I'm nostalgic ;_;

Dar Williams - Southern California Wants To Be Western New York

There's a part of the country could drop off tomorrow in an earthquake
Yeah it's out there on the cutting edge, the people move, the sidwalks shake
And there's another part of the country with a land that gently creaks and thuds
Where the heavy snows make faucets leak in bathrooms with free-standing tubs
They're in houses that are haunted, the with kids who lie awake and think
About all the generations past who used to use that dripping sink

And sometimes one place wants to slip into the other just to see
What it's like to trade its demons for the restless ghost of Mrs. Ogilvey
She used to pick the mint from her front yard to dress the Sunday pork
Sometimes southern California wants to be western New York

It wants to have a family business in sheet metal or power tools
It wants to have a diner where the coffee tastes like diesel fuel
And it wants to find the glory of a town they say has hit the skids
And it wants to have a snow day that will turn its parents into kids
And it's embarrassed, but it's lusting after a SUNY student with mousy brown hair who is
Taking out the compost, making coffee in long underwear

And southern California says to save a place, I'll meet you there
And it tried to pack up its Miata, all it could fit was a prayer
Sometimes the stakes are bogus, sometimes the fast lane hits a fork
Sometimes southern California wants to be western New York

Tempe, Arizona thinks the Everglades are greener and wetter
And Washington, D. C. thinks that Atlanta integrated better
But I think that southern California has more pain that we can say
'Cause it wants to travel back in time, but it just can't leave L. A.

But now I hear they've got a theme park planned, designed to make you gasp and say,
Oh, I bet that crumbling mill town was a booming mill town in its day
And the old investors scoff at this, but the young ones hope they'll take a chance
And they promise it will make more dough than Mickey Mouse in northern France
And the planners planned an opening day, a town historian will host
And the waitresses look like waitresses who want to leave for the west coast

And they'll have puttering on rainy weekends, autumn days that make you feel sad
They'll have hundred year old plumbing and the family you never had
And a Hudson River clean-up concert and a bundle-bearing stork
And I hear they've got a menu planned, it's trés western New York...

Goldfrapp: Strict Machine

I get high on a buzz
Then a rush when I'm plugged in you
I connect
When I'm flush
You get love when told what to do

Wonderful electric
Wonderful electric
Wonderful electric
Cover me in you

I'm in love, I'm in love
I'm in love with a strict machine

I'm in love, I'm in love
I'm in love with a strict machine

When you send me a pulse
Feel a wave of new love
Through me
I'm dressed in white noise
You know just what I want
So please

Wonderful electric
Wonderful electric
Wonderful electric
Cover me in you.

Garbage: Queer

Hey boy, take a look at me
Let me dirty up your mind
I'll strip away your hard veneer
And see what I can find

The queerest of the queer
The strangest of the strange
The coldest of the cool
The lamest of the lame
The numbest of the dumb
I hate to see you here
You choke behind a smile
A fake behind the fear
The queerest of the queer

This is what he pays me for
I'll show you how it's done
You learn to love the pain you feel
Like father like son

The queerest of the queer
Hide inside your head
The blindest of the blind
The deadest of the dead
You're hungry `cause you starve
While holding back the tears
Choking on your smile
A fake behind the fear
The queerest of the queer

I know what's good for you... you can touch me if you want
I know you're dying to... you can touch me if you want
I know what's good for you... you can touch me if you want
But you can't stop

The queerest of the queer
The strangest of the strange
The coldest of the cool
The lamest of the lame
The numbest of the dumb
I hate to see you here
You choke behind a smile
A fake behind the fear
The queerest of the queer
The strangest of the strange
The coldest of the cool
You're nothing special here
A fake behind the fear
The queerest of the queer

I know what's good for you I know you're dying to
I know what's good for you
I bet you're dying to
You can touch me if you want
You can touch me if you want
You can touch me
You can touch me

But you can't stop.

I bought that Garbage Cd when it came out a few years ago, and it has probably been my most popular purchase amongst my friends and aquaintances. Everyone wanted to borrow / rip it, even my stepdaughter.

I saw them perform live at the Clapham Grand before I went to live in Australia, and they were excellent live.

Then when my friend came out to visit us in Melbourne we went to see them perform at the Metro Club, where the supporting act was a group we hadn't heard much about (or of) called Machine Gun Fellatio.

I have to say it was one of the best gigs I've ever been to. I was there only for Garbage really, but was completely won over by M.G.F. - their stage show involved stiltwalkers and a rollerskating stripping female guest vocalist performing a song called 'Muthaf*cker on a Motorcycle' and a semi-naked keyboard player who played synths with what appeared to be a furry toy (shades of Eno in Roxy Music playing his moog with a huge plastic knife and fork).

Absolutely brilliant night.

Hedwig and the Angry Inch - The Origin Of Love

When the earth was still flat
And the clouds made of fire
And the mountains stretched up to the sky, and sometimes higher
Folks roamed the earth like big rolling kegs
They had two sets of arms, they had
Two sets of legs
They had two faces peering out of one giant head
So they could watch all around them as they talked while they read
And they never knew nothing of love
It was before the origin of love

Well there were three sexes then
One that looked like two men
Glued up back to back
They were the children of the sun
And similar in shape and girth
Were the children of the earth
They looked like two girls rolled up in one
And the children of the moon was like a fork stuck on a spoon
They were part sun
Part earth
Part daughter
Part son
Oh the origin of love

Well the gods grew quite scared of our strength and defiance
And Thor said, "I'm gonna kill them all with my hammer
Like I killed the giants"
But Zeus said, "No,
You'd better let me use my lightning like scissors
Like I cut the legs off the whales
Dinosaurs into lizards"

And then he grabbed up some bolts
He let out a laugh
Said, "I'll split them right down the middle
Gonna cut them right up in half!"
And then storm clouds gathered above into great balls of fire

And then fire shot down from the sky in bolts
Like shining blades of a knife
And it ripped right through the flesh
Of the children of the sun and the moon and the earth
And some indian god sewed the wound up to a hole
Pulled it 'round to our bellies to remind us the price we paid
And Osiris and the gods of the nile gathered up a big storm
To blow a hurricane
To scatter us away
With a flood of wind and rain
And a sea of tidal waves
To wash us all away
And if we don't behave
They'll cut us down again
We'll be hopping 'round on one foot
And looking through one eye...

Last time I saw you
We had just split in two
You were looking at me
I was looking at you, you
Had a way so familiar
But I could not recognize
'Cause you had blood on your face
And I had blood in my eyes
But I could swear by your expression
That the pain down in your soul
Was the same as the one down in mine
That's the pain
That cuts a straight line down through the heart
We called it love
We wrapped our arms around each other
Tried to shove ourselves back together
We were making love
Making love

It was a cold dark evening such a long time ago
When by the mighty hand of Jove
It was a sad story how we became lonely two-legged creatures
The story of the origin of love
That's the origin of love...

Words and music: Eric Bogle

"My youngest son came home today
His friends marched with him all the way
The fife and drum beat out the time
While in his box of polished pine
Like dead meat on a butcher's tray
My youngest son same home today

My youngest son was a fine young man
With a wife, a daughter and two sons
And a man he would have lived and died
Till by a bullet sanctified
Now he's a saint or so they say
They brought their young saint home today

An Irish sky looks down and weeps
Upon the narrow Belfast streets
At children's blood in gutters spilled
In dreams of glory unfulfilled
As part of freedom's price to pay
My youngest son came home today

My youngest son came home today
His friends marched with him all the way
The pipe and drum beat out the time
While in his box of polished pine
Like dead meat on a butcher's tray
My youngest son came home today
And this time he's here to stay."

年轻朋友们来相会 (八十年代的新一辈
Come and Gather Young Friends (New Generation of the 1980s)

(This Chinese song is from 1980 at the time of economic liberalization.)

年轻的朋友们今天来相会,
Young friends, let's gather today
荡起小船儿暖风轻轻吹,
Row the boat as the soft breeze blows
花儿香,鸟儿鸣,春光惹人醉,
The flowers are fragrant, the birds are calling, the spring sunshine is intoxicating
欢歌笑语绕着彩云飞。
Laughter and song circle the colorful clouds
啊,亲爱的朋友们,美妙的春光属于谁?
Ah, myfriends, who does the beautiful spring belong to?
属于我,属于你,属于我们八十年代的新一辈!
To me, to you, to our new generation of the 1980s!

再过二十年我们重相会,
After twenty years we meet again
伟大的祖国该有多么美!
How beautiful is our heroic nation
天也新,地也新,春光更明媚,
The sky is new, the ground is new, the spring sun shines brighter
城市乡村处处增光辉。
Glory rises in the cities and villages
啊,亲爱的朋友们,创造这奇迹要靠谁?
Ah, my friends, who will create this wonder?
要靠我,要靠你,要靠我们八十年代的新一辈!
It'll take me, it'll take you, it'll take our new generation of the 1980s!

但愿到那时我们再相会,
I hope we can meet again at that time
举杯赞英雄,光荣属于谁,
A toast to the heroes, to whom the glory belongs
为祖国,为"四化",流过多少汗?
For our nation, for the "Four Modernizations", how we have sweated
回首往事心中可有愧。
Looking back on the past we hold some shame in our hearts
啊,亲爱的朋友们,愿我们自豪地举起杯,
Ah, my friends, let us raise our cups with pride
挺胸膛,笑扬眉,光荣属于八十年代的新一辈!
Stand up tall and smile, the glory belongs to our new generation of the 1980s!

Skunk Anansie: Weak

Lost in time I can't count the words
(I) said when I thought they went unheard
all of those harsh thoughts so unkind
'cos I wanted you

(and) now I sit here I'm all alone
so here sits a bloody mess, tears fly home
a circle of angels, deep in war
'cos I wanted you

weak as I am, no tears for you
weak as I am, no tears for you
deep as I am, I'm no ones fool
weak as I am

and what am I now but love's last home
I'm all of the soft words I once owned
if I opened my heart, there'd be no space for air
'cos I wanted you

weak as I am, no tears for you
weak as I am, no tears for you
deep as I am, I'm no ones fool
weak as I am

with this tainted soul
in this weak young heart
am I too much for you

weak as I am, no tears for you
weak as I am, no tears for you
deep as I am, I'm no ones fool
weak as I am
(to fade)

Bessie Smith: Empty Bed Blues

I woke up this morning with a awful aching head
I woke up this morning with a awful aching head
My new man had left me, just a room and a empty bed
Bought me a coffee grinder that's the best one I could find
Bought me a coffee grinder that's the best one I could find
Oh he could grind my coffee, cause he had a brand new grind
He's a deep sea diver with a stroke that can't go wrong
He's a deep sea diver with a stroke that can't go wrong
He can stay at the bottom and his wind holds out so long
He knows how to thrill me and he thrills me night and day
Oh he knows how to thrill me, he thrills me night and day
He's got a new way of loving, almost takes my breath away
Lord he's got that sweet somethin' and I told my girlfriend Lou
He's got that sweet somethin' and I told my girlfriend Lou
From the way she's raving, she must have gone and tried it too

(Part 2

When my bed get empty make me feel awful mean and blue
When my bed get empty make me feel awful mean and blue
My springs are getting rusty, sleeping single like I do
Bought him a blanket, pillow for his head at night
Bought him a blanket, pillow for his head at night
Then I bought him a mattress so he could lay just right
He came home one evening with his beret way up high
He came home one evening with his beret way up high
What he had to give me, make me wring my hands and cry
He give me a lesson that I never had before
He give me a lesson that I never had before
When he got to teachin' me, from my elbow down was sore
He poured my first cabbage and he made it awful hot
He poured my first cabbage and he made it awful hot
When he put in the bacon, it overflowed the pot
When you git good lovin', never go and spread the news
Yes he'll doublecross you, and leave you with them empty bed blues

Tori Amos - A Case Of You
words and music by Joni Mitchell

Just before our love got lost you said,
"I am as constant as the northern star."
I said, "Constantly in the darkness,
Where's that at?
If you want me I'll be in the bar."

On the back of a cartoon coaster
In the blue T.V. screen light
I drew a map of Canada
Oh, Canada
with your face sketched on it twice.

In my blood like holy wine
You taste so bitter and so sweet
Well, I could drink a case of you, darling
And I would still be on my feet
I would still be on my feet

Oh I am a lonely painter
I live in a box of paints
I'm frightened by the devil
And I'm drawn to those ones that ain't afraid
I remember that time you told me
"Love is touching souls"
Surely you touched mine
'Cause part of you pours out of me
In these lines from time to time

My blood
My holy wine
Tastes so bitter and so sweet
Well I could drink a case of you, darling
And I would still be on my feet
I would still be on my feet

I met a woman
She had a mouth like yours
She knew your devils and your deeds
and she said, "Go to him, stay with him
But be prepared to bleed..."

My blood
My holy wine
Tastes so bitter and so sweet
Well I could drink a case of you, darling
and I would still be on my feet
I would still be on my feet

Mary Coughlan: The Magdalen Laundry

For seventeen years I've been
scrubbing this washboard
Ever since the fellas started in after me
My mother poor soul didn't know what to do
The Canon said " Child, there's a place for you. "
Now I'm serving my time at the Magdalen Laundry
I'm toeing the line at the Magdalen Laundry

There's girls from the country, girls from the town
Their bony white elbows going up and down
The reverend mother as she glides through the place
A tight little smile on the side of her face
She's running the show at the Magdalen Laundry
She's got nowhere to go but the Magdalen Laundry

Oh Lord won't you let me
Don't you let me
Won't you let me wash away the stain
Oh Lord won't you let me wash away the stain

I'm washing altar linen and cassocks and stoles
I'm scrubbing long johns for these holy joes
We know where they've been when
they're not saving souls
What the red wine split what the
smooth hand poured
We're squeezing it out at the Magdalen Laundry
We're scrubbing it out at the Magdalen Laundry

Oh Lord won't you let me
Don't you let me
Won't you let me wash away the stain
Oh Lord won't you let me wash away the stain

Sunday afternoon when the Lord`s at rest
It`s off to the prom watch the waves roll by
We`re chewing on our toffees hear
the seagulls squawk
There go the maggies the children talk
Through our faces they stare at
the Magdalen Laundry
In our eyes see the glare of the Magdalen Laundry

Oh Lord won't you let me
Don't you let me
Won't you let me wash the stain
Oh Lord won`t you let me wash away the stain

Oh Lord won't you let me
Don't you let me
Won't you let me wash away the stain
Oh Lord won't you let me wash away the stain

Oh Lord won't you let me
Don't you let me
Won't you let me wash away the stain
Oh Lord won't you let me wash away the stain

Molly,

That sounds wild! I haven't been to a concert in ages, I guess the last one was Ian Anderson last year in our local theatre. It wasn't wild, but I sat not 10 feet from him and it was great to see him up close like that.

Clear Skies,

I have that Hedwid and the Angry Inch CD, and it's really good. I can't help visualizing the movie when it's playing, which usually cracks me up.

Six inches forward, five inches back, I've got an angry inch!

I think, knowing something of yoru musical tastes, you'd have loved the concert- it was like 70s glam rock meets new wave meets street theatre thing.

Here's a little ditty in a similar (blue) vein to the Hedwig song :

Victoria Spivey: The Organ Grinder Blues

Organ grinder, organ grinder,
organ grinder, play that melody
Take your organ, and grind some more for me
Grind it north, grind it north,
grind it north, and grind it east and west,
When you grind it slow, I like it the best
Organ grinder, organ grinder,
you don't have to pass your hat no more
You're the grinder I've been waitin' for
Organ grinder, organ grinder,
your sweet music seems to ease my mind
It's not your organ, but it's the way you grind
Organ grinder, organ grinder,
Organ grinder, don't tell me you're through
If you are tired, let mama grind a while for you

And nary a double entendre in sight

I actually wasn't the world's biggest fan of the Hedwig movie; I mean, I liked it, but I didn't adore it the way some of my friends did. Bits of it were just a little too surreal and disjointed. But that song is one of the few that can actually move me to tears.
Another of that few follows

Two For Tuesday: Dar Williams

Mortal City

She never should have rented this apartment in the Mortal City
The cold comes though every crack she puts her hand up to
The radiator's broken, so she has to use electric heat

And tonight was the first date with the brother of the guy she worked next to
He lived a couple streets away
He listened, he had things to say
She asked him up for dinner sometime
Sometime was tonight

The radio gave updates on the ice storm while she made the dinner
They said, from all the talk, you shouldn't drive or even walk
And this just in, we're asking everyone to turn off their power
They need it at the hospital

She ran around pulling plugs, then she called him up
Maybe now they shouldn't meet
He said that he would brave the streets
She met him at the door with a blanket and a candle
Saying, I heard it on the radio, I had to turn my power off

He said, you're not the only one, the streets were dark tonight,
It was like another century
With dim lamps and candles lighting up the icy trees
And the clouds and a covered moon

She said what kind of people make a city
Where you can't see the sky and you can't feel the ground?

I tell you something, I have this feeling that this city's dying
He said, it's not dying, it's the people who are dying
She said yes, yes, I think the people are dying and nobody cares...

We had all this technology
Our dreams were bold and vague
And then one city got bad planners, one city got the plague

He asked, why did you move here? She said, for the job
For the job and I've been
So lonely here
So lonely
There's no one I can talk to, you know I don't even know your brother

He smiled and said, sometimes at night I walk out by the river
The city's one big town, the water turns it upside down
People found this city because they love other people
They want their secretaries, they want their power lunches

And think about tonight, I heard the same newscast you did
I unplugged everything, I looked out the window
And I think the city heard, I watched as one by one the lights went off
So that they could give their power to the hospital

They ate in silence while she thought this over
They sat together in a dark room in the Mortal City
Shifting in their blankets so they wouldn't get spaghetti on them

Then came the awkward moment
After dinner, what to do
The ice was still falling, the streets were still dangerous
The cabs were not running
And this neighborhood was not the greatest

They both looked at the space where a couch would've been
She felt her stomach sink, she felt like she could hardly think

She said, I never should have rented this apartment in the Mortal City
The cold comes through every crack I put my hand up to
The radiator doesn't work, I have to use electric heat

And that settled it, they would both sleep in her bed
It was a matter of survival
She brought out t-shirts, sweatshirts, sweatpants, socks, hats
If there was ever any thought of what would happen in that bed tonight
There was no question now
They could barely move
They were wrapped up like ornaments waiting for another season

They lay in bed, they listened to the pelting ice
He said, my brother's not a bad guy, he's just quiet
I wished you liked this city
She said, maybe I do

I think I have a special kind of hearing tonight
I hear the neighbors upstairs
I hear my heart beating
I hear one thousand hearts beating at the hospital
And one thousand hearts by their bedsides waiting
Saying that's my love in the white gown

We are not lost in the Mortal City
We are not lost in the Mortal City...

The Ballad Of Mary Magdalen

My name is Mary Magdalen
I come from Palestine
Please excuse these rags I’m in
I’ve fallen on hard times
But long ago I had my work
When I was in my prime
But I gave it up, and all for love
It was his career or mine

Jesus loved me, this I know
Why on earth did I ever let him go?
He was always faithful, he was always kind
But he walked off with this heart of mine

A love like this comes but once
This I do believe
And I’ll not see his like again
As I live and breathe
And I’m sorry if I might offend
But I’ll never see
How the tenderness I shared with him
Became a heresy

Jesus loved me, this I know
Why on earth did I ever let him go?
He was always faithful, he was always kind
But he walked off with this heart of mine

And I remember nights we spent
Whispering our creed
Our rituals, our sacrament
The stars our canopy
And there beneath an olive tree
We’d offer up our plea
God’s creation, innocent
His arms surrounding me

Jesus loves me, this I know
Why on earth did he ever have to go?
He was always faithful, he was always kind
But he walked off with this heart of mine
He was always faithful, he was always kind
But he walked off with this heart of mine

Langt er síđan sá ég hann
Sannlega fríđur var hann

10000 Maniacs - Eden
(alternate lyrics demo)

We are the roses in the garden
Beauty with thorns among our leaves
To pick a rose you ask your hands to bleed
What is the reason for having roses
When your blood is shed carelessly?
It must be
For something
More than vanity...

Believe me, the truth is we're not honest, not the people
That we dream
Not as close as we could be
How can we know the one to follow?
With the best of the best we could lead
Toward a better life, toward
Decency

How we love the lives we're given
But we're trapped inside the prison
Of our goodness
Of our evil
Of our humanity

All in time
But the clock is another demon that divides our time in Eden
In our paradise
Will we know the simple pleasure?
Will we learn to love and treasure
These precious gifts of life?

Be enraptured
By the bounty
And the phrase we heard resounding...

Fire Inc - Tonight Is What It Means To Be Young
lyrics by Jim Steinman

I've got a dream 'bout an angel on the beach
And the perfect waves are starting to come
His hair is flying out in ribbons of gold
And his touch has got the power to stun

I've got a dream 'bout an angel in the forest
Enchanted by the edge of a lake
His body's flowing in the jewels alive
And the earth below is starting to shake

But I don't see any angels in the city
I don't hear any holy choirs sing
And if I can't get an angel
I can still get a boy
And a boy'd be the next best thing
The next best thing to an angel
A boy'd be the next best thing

I've got a dream 'bout a boy in a castle
And he's dancing like a cat on the stairs
He's got the fire of a prince in his eyes
And the thunder of a drum in his ears

I've got a dream 'bout a boy on a star
Lookin' down upon the rim of the world
He's there all alone and dreamin' of someone like me
I'm not an angel but at least I'm a girl

I've got a dream when the darkness is over
We'll be lyin' in the rays of the sun
But it's only a dream and tonight is for real
You'll never know what it means
But you'll know how it feels
It's gonna be over
Over!
Before you know it's begun
Before you know it's begun...

It's all we really got tonight
Stop your cryin', hold on
Tonight!
Before you know it it's gone
Tonight!
Tonight is what it means to be young
Tonight is what it means to be young

Let the revels begin
Let the fire be started
We're dancing for the restless and the broken-hearted
Let the revels begin
Let the fire be started
We're dancing for the desperate and the broken-hearted

Say a prayer in the darkness for the magic to come
No matter what it seams
Tonight is what it means to be young
Before you know it it's gone
Tonight is what it means to be young
Before you know it it's gone

The things they say
And then the things they do
Nothin's gonna stop us if our aim is true...
The things they say
And then the things they do
Nothin's gonna stop us if our aim is true
Because tonight is what it means to be young...

Boys of Bedlam

For to see mad Tom of Bedlam
Ten thousand miles I'd travel
Mad Magdalen goes on dirty toes
For to save her shoes from gravel

Chorus:

Still I sing bonnie boys, bonnie mad boys
Bedlam boys are bonnie,
For they all go bare and they live by the air
And they want no drink nor money

I went down to Satan's kitchen
For to get me food one morning
And there I got souls piping hot
All on the spit a-turning

Chorus

Me staff has murdered giants
And me bag a long knife carries
For to cut mince pies from children's thighs
With which to feed the fairies

Chorus

This spirit's white as lightning
Would on me travels guide me
The moon would shake and the stars would quake
When ever they espied me

Chorus

And when that I have murdered
The man in the moon to a powder
His staff I'll break and his dog I'll shake
And there'll howl no demon louder

Chorus

For to see mad Tom of Bedlam
Ten thousand years I'd travel
Mad Maudlin goes on dirty toes
For to save her shoes from gravel

Chorus

Pandora's Box - Good Girls Go To Heaven

When the wind is howling through your window pane
It's not the only pain of the night
You're burning up in your bed, you got a fever of love
And there's not an anti-body in sight

Hey Jenny, Jenny
Why are you crying?
There's a beauty of a moon in the sky
But I guess when you've been leading such a sheltered life
You never lift your head and look so high

You don't have a lot
But it's all that you got
And you can turn it into more than it seems
Just give it a shot
Fantasise every movement and
Imagine every inch of your dream

No one said it had to be real
But it's gotta be something you can reach out and feel
It ain't right
It ain't fair
Castles fall in the sand
And we fade in the air
And the good girls go to heaven
But the bad girls go everywhere
Good girls go to heaven
And the bad girls go everywhere

Somebody told me so
Somebody told me, now I know
Every night in my prayer
I'll be praying that the
Good girls go to heaven
But the bad girls go everywhere

When the sweat is sizzling on your skin in the dark
And you're desperate now for somewhere to turn
Every muscle in rebellion
Every nerve is on edge
And every limb has been erotically burned

Hey Johnny, Johnny
Why are you shaking?
When a boy should do whatever he can
You've been nothing but an angel
Every day of your life
And now you wonder what it's like to be damned

You don't have a lot
But it's all that you've got
And you can turn it into more than it seems
Just give it a shot
Fantasise every movement and
Imagine every inch of your dream

No one said it had to be real
But it's gotta be something you've been wanting to feel
It ain't right
It ain't fair
Castles fall in the sand
And we fade in the air
And the good boys go to heaven
But the bad boys go everywhere
Good boys go to heaven
Bad boys go everywhere

Somebody told me so
Somebody told me now I know
Every night in my prayer
I'll be praying that the
Good boys go to heaven
But the bad boys go everywhere

Every time I try and dream you
I can't believe how hard it's been to
Conjure up your face and trace your body in the air
All the seconds go on forever
But the thirds and the fourth ones are even better
Every time I do it just a little bit longer
Every time I dream it's just a little bit stronger
Than real life

No one said it had to be real
But it's gotta be something you can reach out and feel
It ain't right
It ain't fair
Castles fall in the sand
And we fade in the air
And the good girls go to heaven
But the bad girls go everywhere
Good girls go to heaven
Bad girls go everywhere...

Song: The Wild Mountain Thyme

O the summer time has come
And the trees are sweetly blooming
And wild mountain thyme
Grows around the purple heather.
Will you go, lassie, go?

Chorus
And we'll all go together,
To pull wild mountain thyme,
All around the purple heather.
Will you go, lassie, go?

I will build my love a tower,
By yon clear crystal fountain,
And on it I will pile,
All the flowers of the mountain.
Will you go, lassie, go?

Chorus

I will range through the wilds
And the deep land so dreary
And return with the spoils
To the bower o' my dearie.
Will ye go lassie go ?

Chorus

If my true love she'll not come,
Then I'll surely find another,
To pull wild mountain thyme,
All around the purple heather.
Will you go, lassie, go?

Chorus

What Would Willie Do?
Gary Allan

I was lost in trouble and strife, I heard a voice and it changed my life
And now it's a brand new day, and I ain't afraid to say
You're not alone when you're down and out
And I think you know who I'm talking about
When I don't know how I'll get through
I ask myself what would Willie do

What would Willie do, well he'd travel so far with nothing but a song and his old guitar
And a tour bus and some semi-trucks, thirty crew men and a little bit of luck
Well he loves all the people, the ugly and the randy
If you don't believe me take a look at the family
And they'll tell you that it's true
When skies are gray what would Willie do

Well long ago he came unto us, his words were simple but they went right through us
And the whole world sang along, but then they didn't want to hear his songs
He was gone and we thought we'd lost him
But he grew his hair and he moved to Austin
And all of the people smiled, they came to hear him sing from miles
Like a miracle all those rednecks and hippies
From New York City down to Mississippi
Stood together and raised a brew
When it's all gone wrong what would Willie do

You know sometimes I wonder when I ain't gettin' nowhere
What would old Willie do when it all gets too much to bear
And I can see him on his lonely old tour bus
And he's got his problems just like any of us
Well he'd just take a deep breath and then he'd let it all go
And he'd take another deep breath and let it all go
And he'd take another deep breath...and he'd hold it
Ah and I bet he'd feel hungry in a way that seems strange
Yeah hungry for all the things that he just can't change
Like the time he passed out in is own bedroom
And his wife sewed him up in the sheets and beat him with a broom and he forgave her
And you think that's rough, well then the IRS came and they took away all of his stuff
They took his golf course and his recording studio, and he just went out and did another show
So when it's all coming down on you
You better ask yourself what would Willie do

What would Willie do, well he'd take a little time
And talk to old rooser as he'd drive on down the line
And there's millions down that road, and with a word he's gonna lighten their load
He loves all the people no matter their races
Hell he even had a hit country song with Julio Iglesias
And that ain't easy to do, so when it's all too much, what would Willie
When the game gets tough what would Willie
When they call your bluff what would Willie do

If you said goodbye to me tonight
There would still be music left to write
What else could I do
I'm so inspired by you
That hasn't happened for the longest time

I'm that voice you're hearing in the hall
And the greatest miracle of all
Is how I need you
And how you needed me too
That hasn't happened for the longest time

Maybe this won't last very long
But you feel so right
And I could be wrong
Maybe I've been hoping too hard
But I've gone this far
And it's more than I hoped for

Who knows how much further we'll go on
Maybe I'll be sorry when you're gone
I'll take my chances
I forgot how nice romance is
I haven't been there for the longest time

I had second thoughts at the start
I said to myself
Hold on to your heart
Now I know the woman that you are
You're wonderful so far
And it's more than I hoped for

I don't care what consequence it brings
I have been a fool for lesser things
I want you so bad
I think you ought to know that
I intend to hold you for the longest time

A cheery one for a snowy day in London:

Artist: Ida Cox

Song: Death Letter Blues

I received a letter that my man was dyin'
I received a letter that my man was dyin'
I caught the first plane and went home flyin'

When I got there the folks had gathered around
When I got there the folks had gathered around
His eyes was set and his face was full of frowns

He wasn't dead but he was slowly dyin'
He wasn't dead but he was slowly dyin'
And to think of him I just can't help from cryin'

I followed my daddy to the buryin' ground
I followed my daddy to the buryin' ground
I watched the pall bearers slowly let him down

That was the last time I saw my daddy's face
That was the last time I saw my daddy's face
Mama love you sweet papa but I wish I could take your place

For some reason this seems appropriate.

Del Amitri - Nothing Ever Happens

Post office clerks put up signs saying 'position closed'
And secretaries turn off typewriters and put on their coats
And janitors padlock the gates
For security guards to patrol
And bachelors phone up their friends for a drink
While the married ones turn on a chat show

And they'll all be lonely tonight and lonely tomorrow

Gentlemen time please, you know we can't serve any more
Now the traffic lights change to stop, when there's nothing to go
And by five o'clock everything's dead
And every third car is a cab
And ignorant people sleep in their beds
Like the doped white mice in the college lab

Nothing ever happens, nothing happens at all
The needle returns to the start of the song
And we all sing along like before

And we'll all be lonely tonight and lonely tomorrow

Telephone exchanges click while there's nobody there
The Martians could land in the carpark and no one would care
And closed-circuit cameras in department stores shoot the same video every day
And the stars of these films neither die nor get killed
Just survive constant action replay

Nothing ever happens, nothing happens at all
The needle returns to the start of the song
And we all sing along like before

And we'll all be lonely tonight and lonely tomorrow

Bill hoardings advertise products that nobody needs
While Angry from Manchester writes to complain about
All the repeats on T.V.
And computer terminals report some gains
In the values of copper and tin
While American businessmen snap up Van Goghs
For the price of a hospital wing

And nothing ever happens, nothing happens at all
The needle returns to the start of the song
And we all sing along like before
Nothing ever happens, nothing happens at all
They'll burn down the synagogues at six o'clock
And we'll all go along like before

And we'll all be lonely tonight and lonely tomorrow

Song: Only Women Bleed

Man got his woman to take his seed
He got the power - oh, she got the need
She spends her life through pleasing up her man
She feeds him dinner or anything she can

She cries alone at night too often
He smokes and drinks and don't come home at all
Only women bleed
Only women bleed
Only women bleed

Man makes your hair gray, he's your life's mistake
All you're really lookin' for is an even break
He lies right at you, you know you hate this game
He slaps you once in a while and you live and love in pain

She cries alone at night too often
He smokes and drinks and don't come home at all
Only women bleed
Only women bleed
Only women bleed
Only women bleed
Only women bleed
Only women bleed
Only women bleed

Man got his woman to take his seed
He got the power - oh, she got the need
She spends her life through pleasing up her man
She feeds him dinner or anything she can

She cries alone at night too often
He smokes and drinks and don't come home at all
Only women bleed
Only women bleed
Only women bleed

Black eyes all of the time
Don't spend a dime
Clean up this grime
And you there down on your knees begging me please
Come watch me bleed

Only women bleed
Only women bleed
Only women bleed
Only women bleed
Only women bleed
Only women bleed
Only women bleed
