My Job Offers Support Apolyton or Terrorists Win

I've finally sent out my resume and the crappy job offers are pouring in.

I'm a foreign english teacher like Boshko.

This is one that has really caught my eye:

$:1.9-2.1 mil Won
Hours: 6:30AM-8:20 AM, then 6:30 PM -9:50PM
Days: You work 20 days a month (i.e. 2-3 days a week) plus 'normal' korean vacations (choo suk, etc)
Students: ALL ADULTS (this is very good)
Teachers: 8 foreigners
School: Mokdong-gu, Seoul, established 5 years +
Apartment: 10 Mil Won 'key money' for apartment at about 50 000 W a month interest.

and it's in Seoul, so possibly I can resume teaching privates at $45 an hour and screw myself over again...

Anyway it seems set so meet in Itaewon for piss-up. Connorkimbro if you are still defending us from wacky NK state TV or whatever u do drop by..

Humour value: Job offer in all other respects 'ho-hum' in China except for their big selling point: You live and teach in the big Marriot Hotel in downtown Chongqing, Three Gorges Area, and it mentions something about 'banquets in your honour' (probably to make up for the shitty pay)

"Pay is relative, i.e., what you can buy locally with your salary"

I know that...we make 6000-8000 RMB a month, while the average Johnny Yuan has to get by on 1000-1200 RMB a month.

Buuuuuut.....In North American terms that is 2/3rds less than the bare minimum Korean english teacher salary of 1.8 mil!

And NOBODY works for 1.8 excepts Newbs!

So yes if I wanted to play at being a rich Chinese I'd go but until China LET'S IT'S GODDAMN CURRENCY FLOAT there are going to get the 'bottom of the barrel' in foreign English teachers..., other wise known as missionaries, people without real degrees, and people so wierd and unsociable that even Korea rejects them.

Ted Striker: Check out Boshko's GF if he ever posts a pic...

That's because the living expenses are so much higher in RoK.

Not as much higher as you might think, especially with free housing. Now if we all just drank soju instead of imported alcohol we'd be rich.
But while you can live just fine on what you get paid to teach in China, you can't save much of anything while in Korea you can save $1,000/month easily, which is a real difference.

Maybe he's there for the hot Chinese guys. If I were gay I'd certainly prefer them over Koreans
But seriously there's a disproportionate amount of degreeless people and people from "second-rate" English speaking countries like the Phillipines (I'm sure many of them are better teachers than I am but I did see a LOT of job-wanted posts in broken English on the www.eslcafe.com job board). Korea on the other hand, more or less gets most of the "gotta pay off loan. gotta pay off loan" types that're doing English teachings since its the best place to save money if you don't have the qualifications to teach in the Mid-East.

Eek, I wouldn't want to learn English from one of them.

What sort of qualifications do you need to teachin the Mid-East? This sounds very tempting as it would allow me to pay off student loans and prepare for post-grad degree expenses once I'm done my undergrad.

Generally a Masters degree in an applicable field and several years experience for one of the good jobs ($30-40000, free house, resigning bonuses and no taxes). Something I might concievably do for a year to get money for a down payment for a house or something if I stick with this business...

For example, this be a very very nice job:
http://www.eslcafe.com/joblist/index.cgi?read=7190

You could get this job after graduating, but you'd be insane to take it above Korea unless you really really like Saudi Arabia:

The only problem I have with South Korea is Uncle Kim's Happy World of Painful Death and Idealogical Torture to the north, ready to turn me into nuclear snausages.

That said, the Middle East isn't exactly the haven of calm, rational humanity either.

Korea is much safer IMO;

in Arabia Westerners definition of 'unsafe conditions' is getting blown up by a fanatic with a nail-belt, which would really ruin my hair.

in Korea, way-gooks definition of unsafe is heavy traffic in Sincheon.
