LSU v USC Support Apolyton, buy Call to Power 2

Hmm...tough call... (2) LSU beat (1) Oklahoma 21-14 and
(3) USC beat (4) Michigan 28-14.

LSU beat a tougher team and had to knock off Georgia to get in. But USC was dominating and led Michigan 28-7 only to give up a late, rather meaningless TD.

So which is it?

btw Nick Saban... rumored to be head coaching candidate for the Monsters of the Midway...

I don't follow college sports, too corrupt... would Saban do good in Chitown? or would he suck like Spurrier?

I think Saban would be good. He has plenty of experience as an assistant at the pro level and he's a defense-first kind of coach, which is always a good thing. Might be hard to woo him away from LSU, though, now that he'll be making at least $2,300,001 a year.

It's close, but I'd take USC over LSU. Shame they can't play against each other next week.

Damn threadjackers, thx for expressing a relevant opinion Imran. I would have agreed with you Saturday but LSU has impressed me with 2 big wins over tough teams. LSU's only loss came at the hands of Florida (or was it Miami?) while it was Cal that knocked off USC, so I'll have to give the edge to LSU even though my heart is more with USC. My buddy back in high school (Eric Hipp) was USC's field goal kicker back in the very early 80's.

Common sense and tradition. If the #1 team wins their game they stay #1.

If they both played the way they played in their bowl games, definitely LSU. USC played well but not great. Michigan played like barely Top 25 team. OU looked like they had a hangover.

Not that its the reason, but has anyone else noticed the extreme difference in the sync and play level of Oklahoma since Stoops accepted the job at Arizona? They were playing at a whole different level prior to their two bowl games.

I would pick USC... they looked like a much better team than either of the BCS teams.

While USC won the AP poll with 48 first place votes vs 17 for LSU... I found it REALLY interesting that 3 out of the 63 coaches in the Coaches Poll voted for USC as number one, even though by agreement with the BCS, they were all supposed to vote for the winner of the BCS Championship game

Nah, Eric didn't have an older brother of the right age as I recall. And he was a short, stocky guy so I doubt his family genes would have produced a RB. But the vote is close, 5-4 in favor of USC. At least the feelings of most people I discussed the matter with were right about which teams deserved to be in the championship. USC v LSU was that match-up...

Can't remember who said it, but I think the LSU coach said they need to add one game after the bowls are over - a real championship. That would satisfy both lobbies, the bowl advocates and the play off advocates. Seems reasonable, that would also create in essence two bowl games of extra significance.

That would be nice... but is only needed when the BCS screws up like it did this year. If the BCS had done their job, last night would have been for the championship.

LSU lost to Florida 19-0, at home. USC lost to Cal 34-31 (IIRC) in 3OTs, at Cal. Also, it sounds worse than it is because people don't realize that Cal went to a bowl game and won (over Virginia Tech no less)! They aren't patsies.

After watching both games, I think USC had a tougher opponent than LSU. Oklahoma from about a month ago was much better than Michigan or Oklahoma now, but I think Michigan would beat the current Sooners.

Both USC and LSU have terrifying pass rushes; I'd give LSU an edge in the secondary. However, I'd give USC the edge in just about every facet of the offense. I think USC would win by about 10 points in a (truly) neutral site game.

Both USC and LSU both had what pretty much amounted to home field advantage in their games. A truely neutral site for games would be nice

I think what GenghisFarb said seems to be correct. Ever since Mike Stoops left as defensive coordinator to take the job at Arizona, the team has looked lackluster in that area. But, of course, the Offense looked even worse against Kansas State and LSU.

Well, Oklahoma's offense should be fully loaded next season. They got that new running back, White's sprained wrist will have healed, and they'll have the off season to stew over what happened in the post season this year.

I respect Stoops and all but IMO they really should've used another QB instead of White. I know he won the Heisman and all but he had a sprained wrist and ankle. He wasn't going to be able to run forward for a first down if it presented itself (which it did over and over again) and he didn't have his pass accuracy due to the sprained wrist. What were they expecting him to do? Strike the Heisman pose and wow the LSU defense?

Everyone who keeps saying Michigan played well in the Rose Bowl needs to come to grips with reality. They did a very poor job of tackling, they hugged the USC players instead of tackling them, and the USC players just walked out of their "hugs". And then "Butterfingers" Edwards kept dropping the ball over and over again. Yeah he caught it a few times but that sorta falls into the monkeys on the keyboard theory, he missed a lot of big plays that could have put Michigan in a position to win the game.

Out of USC, LSU, OU, and Michigan, USC is the only one that played to their full potential and looked like they used the time before their bowl for full practice. LSU looked kinda sloppy, good enough to win but that's because OU was sloppier than they were. The Nokia Sloppy Bowl.

We really need a national championship game.

Whoever came up with the lame BCS system has got to be shot. There should be a playoff system involving only conference champions. The playoffs could be conducted in December -- culminating in a Championship game on Jan. 1.

I kind of like the concept of having only conference champions involved. I have a hard time with a team that can't even win it's own conference possibly being name national champion

The problem with ONLY conference champs is that there are 11 conferences. You'd need to add at least one at-large team to make it work (1-4 seeds get byes for the first round of the playoffs in a 12 team tourney).

Bah... screw that . I'd rather give it to the highest poll ranked team. There may be some *****ing, but just tell them they are lucky enough to be considered for the 12th seed in the tourney.

Ooooh... had an idea. Why not have the playoff in January and give the 12th seed to the championship of 1-AA .

A "wild card" team should be by invitation. This would help avoid screw ups.
