Mothra A caldera is the largest type of volcano, when one blows it can literally cover the continent in ash destroying crops and clogging everything. Let's put it this way, Krakatoa was a burp in comparison. Yellowstone Lake is a caldera...the continental crust in that region is very thin which is why they have geysers, hot streams, etc, because the magma chamber is very close to the surface. As it fills up after a blast and reaches capacity, the whole region begins to bulge until the crust breaks. They know the caldera has been bulging because they can chart where the lake was compared to where it is now. Forests on one side of the lake have become submerged as the caldera has elevated one end. They're measuring a highway that crosses another caldera in Long Valley, Calif., and it too is rising.
