Best CRPG:

Dungeon master (on my good ol' Atari)

Planescape torment

Baldur's gate 2 (great game, despite the fact that I'm sick and tired of the Forgotten Realms.)

Morrowind (but I don't like the skill system: practicing to level up your skills is realist, but it's not fun. Well, it depends on the skill. Running around for fifteen minutes is not fun.

Best RPG:

Call of Cthulhu

GURPS (well, it looks good on paper. I never tried it in practice.)

Legacy Of The Ancients on my C64 was really cool. I even made my wife a travel version of "Stones Of Wisdom", the mini game for raising your intelligence.

That took everything about the awesome Questron and did it better.

they don't make them like that anymore...

Nethack.

If there was a story (well, there is, there even are alternate storylines depending on your class, but, well, err..., forget it), this game would be even better. Still, I'd like to see a commercial game wher you can do one tenth of the things you can do in Nethack.

Morrowind is good, but it totally lacks in terms of player-NPC interaction. There is close to nothing. You can do quests or refuse them, increase a skill through bribing persons of no interest whatsoever in order to be able to convince the odd character who actually has a dialog option available. Not that your character ever says more than 'yes' or 'no', though... Arcanum was good from that point of view. I guess Fallout too, though I didn't play these.

On Computer:

Alternate Reality series by Phillip Price - old time(80's) rpg on 8bit,I've spent more time in this game world than any other to date(superb graphics and sounds on the 8bit Atari's).

Daggerfall - for its hugeness and trying to push the limits of a CRPG(for me Morrowind is a dumbed down Daggerfall).

Fallout - for character and humour in such a grim setting

Baldurs Gate - for a fun, traditional dnd type rpg.

Paper RPG's:

RuneQuest - great detail in all aspects but needed a very dedicated DM to get the most out of it(the computer game version was fun as well).

Traveller - future RPG with a limitless scope, the only RPG i played where i REALLY felt like a Luke Skywalker/Han Solo character with the universe as my plaything.

Call of Cuthulu - real horror feeling, great setting.

And Real Life for being so damn freaky its not always funny

Yep, that's Morrowind's biggest problem, and that's why Fallout still shines without competition in one area I've heard the rumor that Bethesda has started working on the 4th installment of the Elder Scrolls (the series in which Morrowind is the third installment). I really, really hope there will be actual dialogues. Maybe not with the whole population, which is fricking impossible, but at least with every identifiable person.

Well if they took two more years to add dialogue, maybe it could have worked . It's an incredibly complex game and dialogue would have taken much too long.

I tend to disagree. The engine supports some sort of dialog. For instance, in the end of the game, you've got an actual dialogue with a big powerful drow elf and can try to convince him in several ways, thus the engine is there. Now, about adding lines for a few characters and some answers, it wouldn't have taken that long. Look at other games, almost all show dialogue options. A simple thing like "Sure mate", "I don't think I can trust you" instead of Yes/No doesn't cost much but adds to the experience. Showing more options based on skill also works (though in Morrowind everyone who cares to spend an eternity persuading people will have good diplomatic skills).
As for complexity, it is not as complex as it is big.

I know from experience that adding dialog is the most time consuming part of making an RPG... and then the player only sees half the lines anyway...

FF7 is excellent, but it doesn't really compare to the fabulousness of FF6, and even these excellent games are inferior to the godly Morrowind and Fallout.

yeah, that a problem. Very limited sidequests (I've played and done everything possible in 1,3,4,5,6,7,8,MQ and a few of the GB games), plays out the same way every time, have to resort to cheesy goals of low-levels or something similar to make it interesting. After playing a game like KOTOR, it would be hard to find as much joy in something so linear. (Granted, KOTOR was quite linear, but the ability to go light or dark or inbetween gave much more flexibility)

The FF 8 combat system was by far the most ridiculous tedious system ever, drawing 100's of spells to bolster your stats

Try http://www.adom.de/. Ancient Domains of Mystery is very similar to Nethack, only a few added features (more character classes, changed attribute types, etc) as well as a story line.

Another vote for Fallout - its one of the few games that allows you to actually roleplay a bit. MOrrowind was just too lacking in interaction and i wasn't a great fan of the combat either.

And Blade of Destiny as the first RPG i really got into - making my own maps, character sheets and all that sort of thing.

Really? I have always felt that, as far as Sci-Fi RPG goes, Traveller has the richest background but the worst system.

The accompanying board games are classics though, esp Imperium.

Since I started with Wizardry 6, I was compelled to complete the trilogy with my orginal cast of characters, and it was worth it (for me anyway) to come to the real end.

Even you didn't start with Bane of the Cosmic Forge, it still has a nice ending. Wizardry 8 also seems to be the last of the old school RPGs.
