Kind of disapointing, because I always expected a God Sim from Black and white, and the half-assed strategy game they made it into was really disapointing. But atleast the sequel will be refined and actually (hopefully) have a real focus to it intstead of just being a few hazy concepts slapped together. |
In retrospect, you can see the disaster coming if you look at all the interviews and articles prior to the release of B&W. Here we had a typical Molyneux premise (your actions as a god shaping the world for good or evil) and there were these hastened assurances that they "weren't forgetting about the gameplay".
Guys, forget about the gameplay. Make the world interesting to be in and give us enough to do, especially make it more obvious what's good and what's evil, and you could have had yourself a SimAfterlife instead of a--well, whatever it was.
Hey! Afterlife! There's another one I'd like to see a sequel for.
Yeah, I know it's just SimCity with bonus micromanagement, but the premise, graphics, voice acting, music and humor rocked. Add a few things like "build your own punishment/reward", give us a first person walk-through!
OK, maybe I'm just not well.

SAMURAI JACK? :shakes head in disapproval: It, like every game, would have the potential to succeed. I think maybe an rpg would right for it. It would really suck if they tried to make it a fighting game, unless they introduced something cool and new. But the odds of Samurai Jack coming in contact with something cool, other than cartoon network are slim to none. If we're talking about cartoons that should be made into video games though, how about a Family Guy video game? They made a beavis and butthead game, they can probably do the same with Family Guy. Or they could make a Trigun video game. Or Cowboy Bebop! Actually, lots of anime would be good asa video game. Like .hack//sign Oh wait a minute, isn't that already a game...You can see my point. I think the first show to be made into a game should either be Big O, or Goldenboy just b/c its funny. Akira would be kind of cool too, but they'd have to base it off of the origial manga, b/c it went wayyy in depth.

I don't see any attraction in a game like that [MtG]. It just misses on the attraction of the original card game. |
Heh. I post a cry for "Afterlife 2" and "Space Bunnies Must Die Again!" and I get flak for "Majesty" and "Magic: The Gathering". Go figger.
Majesty had a good, different game dynamic that was not exactly polished, but had a lot of potential. It wasn't short of flaws, given you could win or lose a game based on actions you weren't even aware were going on (though there's potential to that). I enjoyed it nonetheless, and think with more refinement, the concept has classic potential.
As for MtG, I'm not sure what you mean. If the attraction is playing against people and seeing their expression as you trump their, uh, low-level monster rush with a Pestilence card, then I understand your point. That doesn't eliminate the sort of speculative fun of building and experimenting with decks.
If the attraction is collecting cards, then I say "bleah".
Fie on "meta-games". Fie on "rare cards". Fie on spending lots of money in the hopes of getting a strategic card. A pox on it all!

The graphics style could be different and cool. A UPA-influenced fighting/RPG would be interesting and different, though obviously not enough to shore up a bad game. (cf "Oni" which I think got CGW's yearly "best graphics" award while rating only 2 stars as a game.)

Now you're talking! What a great adventure game that could make, or maybe a GTA-style game a la "Simpsons Hit and Run".
You'd play the various family guy characters in different scenarios:
1. Play Peter and be stuck in situations only stupid, racist comments will get you out of.
2. Play Brian and be a police dog, get hooked on cocaine, get arrested for a DUI, and end up directing porno.
3. Play Lois and beat the crap out of interloping New Yorkers and Jennifer Love Hewitt.
4. Play Stewie and try to eviscerate Lois, with a special action section where you shrink to microscopic size, and destory all the sperm in Peter's testicles.
Endless potential.
Or, maybe not.
