ADOM (D&amp;D??) for dummies Put an end to popups!

below is the info it gives on equipment and thier modifiers, but I cant find what a DV and PV modifiers are. is it Defense Value and Pickles Value?

arg. now with the weapons.

I have two swords, a longsword 1d8 and a broadsword 1d7+1. what is the d for? is it the same thing as saying 1-8 and 1-7+1?

DV is Defense Value (dodging), PV is Protection Value (basicly armor).

The 'd' in weapons stands for dice, so the 1d7 + 1 sword can do 2 to 8 damage while the other would be 1 to 8

ADOM != D&D

d6 = a normal six-sided dice (1-6)
2d6 = 2 six-sided dice rolled together and added (2-12)
d12 = a twelve-sided dice (1-12)

The thing to bear in mind is not mimimul and maximum, but average damage. You'll be swinging that sword a lot.

d8 (1-8) has an average of 4.5
d7+1 (2-8) has an average of 5
2d4 (2-8) has an average of 5 too, but has a lower chance of doing maximum damage than d7+1

Really its a matter of taste and statistics.

well, except one thing. if its a 1d6+1 is the 1 added to the result? i.e. if it rolls 2 I actually do 3 damage?

so that means my orc that just died who had a cursed hammer of (-1, 1d10+9) would have been a bad ass if he didnt die? For future refrence should I avoid the random encouters?

You get XP from random encounters, but be careful of out-of-depth critters though.
