Arnelos: I think your suggestion with regards to location-specific names might be a bit too complicated. City sites might shift, the order of their building change and other such things along those lines. We'd have to poll an immense number of names (I don't think there will be that many names suggested) and it would require an incredible amount of organization and thought-out procedure just to get a few cities named.

Suffering from ads?

I don't think it will be all that bad precisely because I don't think all THAT many names are going to get suggested.

We could use something of a hybrid system as I suggested in the sub-plan A. Sites that HAVE location-specific names can be voted on for those location specific names.

For any generlized names, we could just vote on them to give them a preference order of popular support. The Consuls would then be responsible for giving cities those generalized names taking their popular support into account.

That could work and might cut down on the amount of polling done while retaining the tie to popular input.

I think allowing the option for location-specific names is a good idea. The problem with your B option, as I see it, is that there's going to be a lot of general names and not many specific ones. Thus if we try to do location-specific names for all sites, we'll run into a situation where we won't have any and we'll have to fall back on the generalized list.

As far as the generalized list goes, I would like to employ my 2nd suggestion... that being, we poll over the generalized names every so often, and every name that has a certain # or % of votes is added to "the list" which the consuls pick from. This would cut down on the number of polling necessary for a large # of cities. Then we could do the location names in individual polls as needed.

New Idea - City naming lotto style.

Everyone who wants to name a city registers so in a thread.

Someone writes all these peoples forum nicks on slips of paper, folds them and places them in a hat.

For each city location on the map a name is drawn out of the hat and the chosen person gets to name that city.

The consuls can obviously overrule if the name is too vulgar or insulting and demand the person choose another more tasteful name.

If we want to bias the draw slightly in favor of consuls and ministers then they can have two pieces of paper in the hat.

The reason to draw peoples forum nicks instead of just city names is to allow people to customize their city names to the city sites location.

That works for me. The lingering issue is what to do when location-specific names have been suggested for a site. Do we vote only among those location-specific names for that site or do we include names from the generalized list? What if only one location-specific name has been suggested, one which the majority of people here think sounds stupid?

Lose 30 kilos (of popups)

I think we should have a poll with the suggested location names at the top, and then an option saying "pick from generalized list," for example. This gives the team a "back door" to get out of bad names.

Well, this is a hot topic stirred up. I'd say I'm sorry, but I like to see people discussing these things so I'm not, sorry that is.

A really simple way to approach this would be for a generalised list to be assembled based of voting and assigned by the Consuls as they play, and then allow for Senate bills to rename specific sites with specific names.

After all, nothing should deny a later Senate bill regarding any name, should it?

Actually, I'd rather that we found a method for permanently naming cities the way people want to remain in place permanently the first time.

I can understand that, but how do you deny the people when they decide they want something? Not wise to situate oneself in the middle of that running.

Where I am from I am sure the residents of Berlin, Ont. thought that would be the name for all time when they named it so. Unfortunately, stuff happened and it got renamed to Kingston (or was that Waterloo or Kitchener? hmmm).

I guess what I am suggesting is something that the Consuls could use easily without being too rigid.

Since we will be collecting names in the Lex thread, why not just have a nominations thread for each city/two cities when and as we know they will be settled? Nominations would be made by whoever wants to nominate, up to maybe 3 names per person, with ideas taken from the Lex thread or new ideas as suggested. The poll would decide on the name. And, as nye suggests, nothing in place would withstand a Senate vote against it, so a renaming can always take place....

Lets start getting some names!!!!

We have 4 settlers that are wondering around, all of them going to the bottom of the world. We also have a LOT more settlers and cities to build and the cities will come faster and faster, because the settlers won't have to travel so far to get set up.

SO, LET'S GET SOME NAMES THROWN OUT HERE!!

E_T

P.S. the next cities are the silks, cows and some of the other southern city sites (see the link in the turnthreads).

Ok. This thread was for discussing what ways we will use to determine what to name our cites, not for city name suggestions. Please make all suggestions in the apropriate thread naming thread:
