Let's talk silent films Inflate your Upload Space

That's right.
Most people dismiss silent films as hokey or boring. But there are quite a few out there which have held up quite well over the years and have a certain turn of the century charm to them.

-Metropolis
The king of silent films. I especially love the re-edited version that came out a year or two ago which added many of the lost scenes.

-Nosferatu
A classic of horror, scarier than any other Dracula flick. The story behind the making of this movie is quite interesting as well.

-The Lost World
The first dinosaur movie, and a pretty entertaining flick. Featuring an appearance by none other than Sir Arthur Conan Doyle himself.

Any other picks?

Wasn't there some sort of comedy/documentary about that? What was the name?

There was, but it wasn't very good. I think it was called Shadow of the Vampire, or something to that effect.

Silent movies? Just watched City Lights again last week

I downloaded Birth Of A Nation some time ago (it's impossible to get it here on VCR or DVD ) but haven't had a chance to watch it yet.

Birth of a Nation was pretty boring I thought, but it was worth seeing at least once.

I never saw it before, but it being a milestone in movie history and with its controversial content I really want to see it and have it nearby among my other movies

I vote:

Battleship Potemkin
Can't beat Eisenstien.

The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari
Just too psychadelic to leave out.

and Safety Last
For comedic relief.

I went to go see Wings a few months ago, with a Wurlitzer organ playing the background music. Other than a headache brought about by, well, too much organ music, it was pretty enjoyable.

'Extase' with a very naked, very lovely Hedy Lamarr.

Her husband tried to buy up all the prints when she went Hollywood, but luckily for film posterity (people who like stunningly attractive naked women) he was unsuccessful.

Harold Lloyd's films still make me laugh, especially 'Safety Last'. I also love 'The General' and all those old Keystone Cops comedies and Laurel and Hardy films.

And let's hear a big cheer for 'Silent Movie', too.

Oh, and Hitchcock's original 'Blackmail', and 'Number Thirteen.'

The Lost World was the first inflight movie in the world (shown in an airship, the Graff Zeppelin I believe).

I have seen part of Napoleon, but its too long for me.

I think the title is Alexander nevsky- the one about the Russians fighting off the teutonic knights?

Full PM-box? Change here!

the problem with GW Griffith films was, as great as they are, 3hrs is a bit much for silent movies if your not REALLY geared up.

Fritz Lang and Sergei Einstein get it purley for imagery (look at some of the stuff in October 1917).

In recent news, I have discovered that in my "Revolutionary Russia" class, we will be seeing some of Eisenstein's more obscure work. You'll hear again from me once I've seen them.

I just borrowed a stack of dvds from my uncle, Metropolis among them. Pitty its not the fully restored cut. You'd think they wouldn't bother releasing a sub-par version on dvd. Sigh.
