City Naming - Official Poll Support Apolyton or Terrorists Win

Here is the list of suggestions, pick the # option in the poll that you like the most.

List partially stolen from one of Arnelos' posts.

1. Hot_Enamel's Suggestion:
- Give the Consuls the power to give city names.
- Some cities named because of their location.
- Some cities named after honoured members.
- Some names because they're popular and should be used for no other reason that they sound great.
- Consuls receive suggestions from team members, but ultimately Consuls decide

2. Trip's First Suggestion
- people request to have the ability to name a city
- They are placed in a ranked order of when they may suggest city names
- when their turn comes up, they make their suggestion
- suggestions must then be approved by a 2/3 vote of the team

3. Togas' Suggestion
- people suggest names in a thread (sometimes based upon location, sometimes not)
- every so often, we take all of the names suggested, make a 3-day poll, everyone votes, top names are in.
- Consuls pick the winning names and place them to cities as needed/desired.
- People are open, however, to hold a vote on a particular name for a particular city, however.

4. Trip's Second Suggestion
- multiple-choice poll for the set of cities. Each proposed city name with say, at least 5 votes will be added to the "official list" which the Consuls pick from.

5. Vlad Antlerkov's Suggestion
- Each minister and Consul, past or present, can suggest 2 city names (Trip, BFM and vondrack only get one due to Tripoli, Karina, and BFC)
- Everyone else can suggest one city name
- Once we get input from 20 or so members (or at least 30 names), we put all the city names into an Excel file in one column and randomly generate numbers to determine the order.
- Special cities (the new palace) would be voted on with official poll(s).

6. Vondrack's Suggestion
- gather location-based names from citizens.
- process names according to Vlad's suggestion (using a random number generator and listing them by resulting rank)

7. jim_steer's Suggestion
- The MoI produces a new map of the settlement pan with each of the cities numbered
- People then suggest names for the city numbers, tailoring names appropriately
- Consuls and ministers (past and present) could be allowed to suggest 2 city names with others suggesting one (as Vlad suggested)
- In case of naming conflict, we poll

8. conmcb25's Suggestion
- create a list with as many names from as many people as feel like contributing
- use E_T's city placement plan to give people at least an idea of where cities are

9. roadcage's Suggestion
- just use default city names

10. Arnelos' Suggestion (I'm making this one after reading the whole thread again)
- The MoI produces a map with cities marked by number, as suggested by jim_steer
- Members of the team make suggestions by city LOCATION or by generalized name (usable for any location).
- When a location is ready to be built in the near future (as determined by the Consuls), a name for that city is polled from all names available (this admittedly could take more than one round of voting, so planning ahead could certainly help).
SUB-OPTION A: If a location has any suggested location-specific names, ONLY those names are voted upon for that site. If a site has no location-specific names suggested, then ALL non-location-specific names are voted upon by preference for that site. Since any suggested name must be either location-specific or generalized (not both), this could establish certain sites over which location-specific names get status over names you just wany anywhere.
SUB-OPTION B: Location-specific names and generalized names will still compete for sites that have location-specific names. Instead, we might just make ALL names location-specific, though someone is certainly free to suggest their name for every single city (or half or only a quarter, specific cities they like more for it, whatever).
- If a city does not yet have an official name by the time it is founded in-game, the Consuls will give it a placeholder name. That name will be replaced by a permanent name once chosen by the team.

11. jim_steer's lotto style suggestion

Everyone who wants to name a city registers so in a thread.

Someone writes all these peoples forum nicks on slips of paper, folds them and places them in a hat.

For each city location on the map a name is drawn out of the hat and the chosen person gets to name that city.

The consuls can obviously overrule if the name is too vulgar or insulting and demand the person choose another more tasteful name.

If we want to bias the draw slightly in favor of consuls and ministers then they can have two pieces of paper in the hat.

The reason to draw peoples forum nicks instead of just city names is to allow people to customize their city names to the city sites location.

12. Trip's final "Location Specific and Generic List" suggestion

Basically a combination of Arnelos' final idea and my 2nd idea:

The MoI produces a map with cities marked by number, as suggested by jim_steer
- Members of the team make suggestions by city LOCATION or by generalized name (usable for any location). Every 2 weeks a multiple choice poll is held to add names to the official list (as long as there is at least 1 new name suggested within that time span). Every name suggested that has at least 50% + 1 support is added to the official list.
- When a location is ready to be built in the near future (as determined by the Consuls), the consuls pick a name from the official general name list unless that location has any specific names suggested by the senate.
- If the new location has any location-specific names suggested for it a poll is held between the location-specific names suggested along with an option to "pick from list" instead of using the name(s) suggested. If it's voted to pick from the list, then the consuls pick the name as they would for any normal city.

This allows for maximum ease in picking city names (a list is quickly established to pick names from) and allows for people to suggest specific names for cities if they so desire. This prevents a "traffic jam" of names from occuring, having to name each location specifically, but also allows the team to give input on good names.

I've gone for Togas', which I feel most closely reflects my thoughts on the matter: that Consuls will name the cities when they are built, but the name chosen can be contested in a poll to officially rename the city something more permanent.

The Consuls have a list of names taken from those suggested, thinned down by an earlier poll to choose the most popular names suggested.

That actually sounds very similar to the last idea (12) that I had posted up there, only my version was more refined in its details. I hadn't actually noticed how similar Togas' idea was to the final one I made until now.

Wow. That's a lot of options. Probably easier to just pick the one that has my name by it.

Whatever the outcome, please make sure that there are no 'placeholder names' ! I really hate renaming cities.

I voted Arnelos-B, though I fear it may be a little complex.

As I said before, I had not noticed how similar 3 and 12 are. Since they are almost identical (except in a few minor details) the votes for those two options will be counted together.

Likewise, if I find any other options which are so similar they will be counted together also.

I actually like #12 (Trip's latest suggestion) the best.

Btw, thanks a bunch for starting this poll, Trip. I was planning to do this when I got back from my trip, but I'm glad you went ahead and did it.

Tired of ads?

I voted for 3 as it was the best of the lot that I read. I gave up after the second reading of 10 and 12.

Upon a 3rd and 4th reading, however, I have a question about it.

For the poll where names are voted on to be added to the list of names to use for upcoming cities, I assume the location-specific names are omitted? It would make little sense voting to add a location-specific name like 'Lakeside' to a list of those we are going to use soon if we are unsure which city will be built next, especially since we will look at all location specific names ANYWAY for ANOTHER poll to name the city itself.

If this post is confusing in any way I am sorry, but that is about the least convoluted way I can write it.

I picked 3. Mostly because I had a bottle of wine with dinner and 12, which I think is similar - just has so many more words.

I think we need to now poll as to what was the most complex poll ever held on Apolyton. This or the civ choice poll in the C3C ISDG game?

MrWIA: you're correct in assuming the "general" city list polls would not include the site-specific names.

Okay, this bill is passed officially with 12+3 being the option voted for. I will start a new thread with the subject of city names - there people can suggest new names, ask questions about the recently adopted system and other such things.

OK Trip, thanks. As if it mattered now, but you can certainly count my vote for 3 as a vote for 12.
