What would he think of the direction black culture has taken?
"Hate cannot drive out hate, only love can do that." -MLK Jr
King patterned his resistance after Ghandi's non- violence. Yet the culture of violence is now pervasive in black music, and life itself. Gangs, drive by shootings, whatever happened to King's teachings of non-violence? The enemy of black people today seems to be black people. Black on black crime is practicly a daily occurance as gangs such as the 'Bloods' and 'Crypts' carry on their senseless war over 'colors'.
I think MLK Jr would roll over in his grave if he knew what has occured since his death, and that the black community needs another such great man to give it some direction. I don't see leeches such as Sharpton or Jesse Jackson as true leaders that can move their people towards a better, more civilized existance free of hate and fear.
I don't see any of them preaching love any more.

this was all a result of the crack epidemic... things have calmed down considerably since then. my generation is quieter.

exactly my point, sava... exactly my point...
despite what your Leftists like to say, black youth, spanish youth, white youth, asian youth... we're all the same in many ways and all different in many ways. the colour of one's skin is insignificant. young black males, young boricua males, young white males, etc. of my generation (17-21 right now) are calmer than our predecessors.

oh yeah and despite your best efforts, black people do not live in a box. cities are huge places with many different kinds of people. a spanish drug runner on Third and Dauphin shoots a black mugger who hangs around the store at 12th and Dauphin while they at the club at 8th and Diamond. thats urban violence which doesn't only involve black people.

Give me a break Speer- honestly, you have an extremely narrow view of the world. Also, it's not "spanish" youth but hispanic or latino.
As fgor your generation ebing calmer- good for you, well, actually no, becuase that "calmness" might very well translate into apathy, and keeping the low stations in life you have.
As for Doctor King, I do think he would have been disappointed in modenr America, if only becuase his dream ahs not become truth- when a significant portion of all black men have been in prison, with all the negative effects this has on them like being less likely to be employed, or even loosing the vote, he would be shocked.

it should be noted that right now, rap music is in a state that critics call "post-gangster" there's non of the NWA-style violence in rap since 97. if we're talking stereotypes, the stereotype of violent rap is dead. now, it's sex and money obsessed rap.

hispanic means of hispania.... hispania=espana=spain... therefore, spanish means of spain which is of hispania. thus, hispanic=spanish.

quote: the desire to rebel at that age. It is standard issue adolesence |
i see no rebellion whether among near-adults like me or those a few years younger who are still teenagers. all the girls do is wander around the street, sucking dicks, half of them getting pregnant between 12 and 16. and all the boys do is sit on the stoop or hang around the stores, all in the uniform of long white tee's, smoking weed.
around 17, there's a division where those who are going to be something seem to split from the thugs and whoes but we still see each other everyday and grew up with each other, though one group will be mostly in jail within a year or two while i, and a few others, will be well into college.
but no real rebellion. we don't care enough to rebel. i'm odd in having so much passion sometimes but that's mostly up on here that i'm a rebel.

it took me a minute to understand what you were trying to say. you think owning a gun is somehow equivalent to you being violent? america is a completely different world than europe then...
my generation is calmer in that you dont see as many people my age selling drugs or getting addicted to drugs as ten years ago... there's not as many drive-bys and random shootings... there's not as much gang violence... gangs as they were in the early 90's are basically dead...
it's a shame but yeah, me needing a weapon to defend myself has nothing to do with violence.

japher...
so instead of being all crazy, chain-smoking crack and shooting each other like the 18 year olds of a few years ago did, we do nothing but hang around, smoke weed, and be fathers at 16? thats our rebellion?

your rebellion, as is everyone’s, is 'not caring'. every teenager goes through that point and does something deemed by their generation to be cool or rebellious without giving concern to their own real desires and wishes.
Drugs are one such way to rebel, and has been for some time. While the drug of choice changes from generation to generation and social strata to social strata, it is still a constant. Weed has seem to be the constant there, though LSD arose in the 60s and 70s, coke in the 80s and 90s along with heroing, and now ya all got X and what have ya…
Sex is also another rebellion. Always has been. Only in this day and age kids also decide rebel against protection, and there are alot more diseases out there. Sheesh look at the 60s and 70s if you don’t think free sex is a rebellious attitude.
Gang violence is a rebellion too. Only instead of having greasers or the sharks and jets you have crypts, reds, etc... most of which see rap music as their inspiration, whereas it was rock 'n roll in the 50s... Every generation has a sound track.
Yes, it is all rebellion. I call it that because it is how people find themselves. Through not caring they will certainly find themselves in hard times or bad situations at which time they will look around and remember what really is important to them. Then, they will "conform" and seek out the comforts they once had and lost due to not caring. Those who don't will end up dead or in jail as you said, or living behind the 7-11 mumbling about how the government has screwed them when all along it was that they never learned to care about something. Namely, themselves.
I hold on to my soundtrack from days rebelling and continue to listen to bands that sound similar to those days. I don’t listen to them because I am still that rebellious teen, but because it makes me remember those times. They were fun times, scary times. They were times when I was lost and just didn’t care about anything, because I didn’t realize that I had everything.
The more things change, the more they do stay the same.

but my generation has toned down the drugs and violence from our predeccessors... and the sex has been a constant. we're like a lite version of the people who are in their early 30's today.
