I tend to find I learn more, and better, when I read a variety of websites on a subject, especially ones that have numerous references I can look at and attempt to understand.

You don't have to read his other stuff or buy his consulting. But two of the three points of the book are dead on:

1. Faults of cost accounting versus economic rationale.
2. Virtues of debottlenecking (IndustrialEngineering issue).

------------

His third point about discovering thought processes is strained and overdone. (Exploding clouds and all that crap). But that stuff comes in at the end of the book only. If you want to ignore that, you are fine and still enjoy the book. If you take his point as more general (what he talks about in the foreword) about thinking scientifically about business and organizational problems, then there is little to argue with.)

Just read it ok.

ANd as a funny aside, I know what it feels like to have plant management terrified that they would be shut down. Rememeber walking into this little town in France and having 3 days to go over their books, tour facility, etc.

So. You're a dolt. Get some books and stretch your brain a little. Then you can stop being a unabomber.

You're dumb.

No it isn't, nor was it.

Rabelais wrote Gargantua, but maybe I'm just being generous in order to try and give you a good reason for this misunderstanding. They're quite similar in terms of their ideas though.....

[edit] Edited because when I read it again, it seemed to be far more mean than I had intended. [/edit]

Lose 30 kilos (of popups)

Future Shock by Alvin Toffler hasn't been mentioned yet. It's been a very good piece of non-fiction for sorting out priorities in my life.

During my mid 20s I took a sabbatical and read lots (and LOTS) of psychology stuff to try and ascertain if I really was crazy or curable. Kind of self shrinking.

The only conclusion I came to was that I was suffering from sapientism - thinking of myself as old and wise when I wasn't either.

Looking at this thread, I wasn't the only one.

[reply to Park Avenue]

Well..... yes, among other things.
But The Prince is his best-remembered work, though it was never published in his lifetime, and some more obscure critics have cast doubt on his authorship, but I'm happy to believe that he was "the father of political theory".

No, Plato was the disciple of Socrates, whom you may recognise from his much-vaunted turn in popular film Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure. Also supposed to enjoy the "company" of young men. He was "the father of Apolyton OT".

FYI: A Machiavellian book is not necessarily written by Niccolo Machiavelli.
