quote: See above for another choice. I don't like the minimum wage, because I don't see a use for it. It puts more people on welfare, and it stops people from working for the amount they wish to. If I want to work for less than the current minimum wage, why shouldn't I? |
I just doubt many people would accept lowpaid jobs if the extra cash they'd get is too little.
quote: If a corporation can emply people, then it is paying them more, or giving them a better job, than that person would get were the corporation not there, else that worker would quit. |
A job is better than no job, even it's a very bad, unsafe and unhealthy one. People can't just quit and get a better job whenever they feel like it.
quote: Labour is a commodity, just like anything else, IMHO. |
I guess that's a basic difference between us. IMO labour is what gives humans the means to survive, and is part of what gives meaning and structure to their lives. You can't just compare that to for example selling a computer game in a store. IMO economy should be for the benefit of the people, and not the other way around, which I get the impression is what you would want.
quote: No, health and safety regulations should be enforced by the government. |
That sounds rather inefficient and impossible to me, the government controlling health and safety regulations on every little firm in the country. It sounds much more efficient to have a union where employees can tell their complaints and demands without the risk of being fired if the employers don't like the complaints, and then representatives of that union can negotiate with the employers, without needing to involve some large central bureaucratic organisation in it for every little problem.
quote: Defend themselves against what? IMHO, employers should be able to hire and fire at will, as long as they don't breach contract. If they do, the employee can sue. |
That may sound nice in theory, but it doesn't work in reality. Going to court cost time and money. Time and money someone who has just been fired, doesn't have.
And firing at will may sound nice economically speaking, but have you taken into account the social consequences of having a job one day, and being on the street the next day?
quote: Unions have two jobs, higher wages and fewer job cuts. The former simply means higher prices to the consumer, and is working against a free market, since it is like a cartel, trying to force prices higher than they should be; the latter is inefficent. if the same job can be done with fewer people, if there are more people than needed, then job cuts are needed. If job cuts aren't needed, a company wouldn't do them. Unions cause inefficiency, and work against a free market. If you need a union to keep your job, then you shouldn't have that job, as it is inefficient. If you need a union to keep you pay as it is, then you are being paid too much. |
Am I right to deduce you consider the theoretical idea of having an "efficient economy" more important than the happiness and wellbeing of many humans?

It may look that way by the income tax, but that is evened out by corporate pork. We need to go back to before the Reaganites spewed thier supply-side BS on us.
The Progressive Social Democratic Party
1. More progressive income tax
2. End sales tax
3. End funding of schools with property taxes- school funding should come out of central state budgets (thanks GePap)
4. Increase gasoline tax to pay for fuel cell resarch
5. Tax breaks to people with "clean" cars (like hybrids)
6. Cut almost all corporate welfare
7. Tax breaks for co-ops
8. Remove all agricultural subsidies
9. Nationalize the healthcare, fuel/oil/natural gas, energy, and insurance industries
10. Remove all religious references in the government.
11. Proportional Represention in the Senate.
12. Election reforms to create a multi-party system
13. End Electoral Collage
14. Replace state presidential caucuses, primaries, conventions, etc., with nationwide presidential primaries
15. Elections publically financed; all parties with over 3% of the vote get election funds, but cannot go over that amount for thier canidates, you cannot opt out. Parties with less then 3% of the vote are exempted from the restrictions, but do not get goverment funds.
