	Problem upgrading my Spearmen to Pikemen! Please help! Full PM-box? Change here!

Hi there!

I'm currently playing a game as Rome in Civ3C, very good expansion I must say. Anyway I'm now in The Middle Ages and i have researched The Pikemen. Anyway I have decided of course to upgrade. Well I have land routes to all my cities, I have two Iron Desposits which I have a mine and a road on so I'm getting enough Iron. The problem is though I've been able to update some of my Spearmen to Pikemen in some cities but on others I cannot? I get no upgrade option? Like I said all the cities are connected up and they have an Iron resource so what could be the problem?

Do you have a Barracks in the cities that you can't upgrade in? And do you have enough money?

I've just checked my save game and it appears I didn;t have any barracks in the cities I was trying to upgrade in. Thanks, I did not realize you now needed a barracks to upgrade in.

That's right, you've always needed Barracks in order to upgrade. It's been that way since the beginning.

i've found a good deal of problems with upgrading in conquests, it seems to be bugged, i could upgrade pikemen to musketmen, but not spearmen to musketemen, in the same city, I had a barracks, saltpeter, and plenty of cash. same happened when i wanted to upgrade horsemen to cavallry, though knights could be upgraded.

I thought you could no longer upgrade more than 1 level, but then, a couple dozen turns later, it all started working again...

You need to have a barracks, the tech, the cash, movement points and the proper resources in that city. So if you did not see the resources in the city view, that would stop you, namly if the road or harbor was not available.
If this was a city on another land mass, it could require tech to cross the ocean tiles, it could have been blockaded. So the city view will reflect it the resources were available at that time.

Why upgrade? Spearmen can beat tanks, but no one seems to have ever cited a case of pikemen doing it.

The part aout needing barracks in every city is what makes me build Sun Tzu's Art of War in almost every game I play.

You need to have the Spearman in a city with a Barracks, an Iron deposit connected to it, the needed technology and enough cash.

hate it when the damn AI beat me too it, but sun tzu only works on continent you build it on , so still need barracks in new conqueasts over seas

When the AI beats ya to it, it means it's time to take it from him. Once the city with it goes down, the rest of his units won't heal instantly as the rest of their cities won't have barracks.
