losing/selling hospitals and aqueducts Support Apolyton buy from Amazon

Hospitals and aqueducts allow a city to grow beyond 12 or 6 citizens. But if a city of 17 loses its hospital (either through bombardment or selling) does that city start losing population? And if so, how fast?

Can I use the strategy of selling off the hospitals in large captured cities to reduce their pop, so I can then rebuild the hospital and repopulate with my own worker/citizens?

Or, once my own cities reach their optimal size, sell off the hospitals to get some gold and save on upkeep? IMHO, if this were allowed it would be an exploit and I probably wouldn't do it, unless I needed the gold to beat up somebody who wouldn't listen to reason - MY reason

I doubt it loses population - I've never seen that happen for anything other than a food deficit. I suspect it merely stops growing.

You will find it difficult to sell hospitals/aqueducts - it isn't allowed. I don't know that they can be destroyed by bombardment. I have captured many cities where everything else has been destroyed or sold off but the hospital/aqueduct is still there.

Avatar Enlargement: We've got the solution

I have captured 7+ cities without Aqueducts and 13+ cities without Hospitals, but I think that's from the fact that IIRC some buildings are destroyed randomly when you conquer.

I wonder what would happen if you made Aqueducts and Hospitals produce culture? Would they automatically disappear when the city was captured?

But were those 7+ cities next to rivers, and did the 13+ cities have Shakespeare's Theatre? It would make sense that Firaxis would make aqueducts and hospitals invulnerable to anything but complete razing of the city...Just my $0.02, mind you.

If you'll notice that when a city reaches size 7+, the little 'sell icon' next to the Aquaduct goes away. Same for Hospitals @ 13+. Kinda like when you build Sun Tzu's, you can no longer sell your Barracks (same for Graineries and Pyramids, Temples and ToA--until Education). It won't let you sell those improvements once they 'kick-in'. If you want to starve them down, just turn them all into taxmen. They will starve down fairly rapidly.

Just out of curriosity, will a newly conquered city of Taxmen flip back?

Don't know about bombardment or capturing. I've noticed that I've captured cities before and about all they had were Aquaduct and Hospital. Perhaps someone with specific experience can comment on this.

Steven

I have never noticed any captured city lose it Aqua or Hosp. I doubt they can be destroyed by bombardment and of course they cannot be sold.

I've never seen a captured city lose an Aquaduct or Hospital.
I did see an enemy city lose it's Hospital due to air bombardment, but it had already been knocked via bombardment below size 13.

Aquaduct does not reapear on the sell list when the city drops below 7.

Rather than starve cities down, get some use out of the surplus population by buying a worker each turn. Do convert enough of them into specalists to keep the city from growing. Note that if your Agricultural and want the city to go away competely, that evenually you may have to abandon it because as agricrutual you may have difficulties geting a size 2 or especally size 1 city to not run a food surplus.

Those bought workers can come very handy building Radio Towers (+25% attack and +25% defense) with the discovery of the Radio.

Got spare money?

You can sell the preexsting baracks with you build Sun Tzu.
Same goes to any structure that has a wonder equalivent.

What you can't do is sell a structure that only shows up because of the wonder.

That's right, a city of over 6 cannot lose its Aqueduct, and a city of over 12 cannot lose its Hospital, by capturing, selling, or any other means. I think it's just the programmers' way of avoiding a little paradox.

I'm sure I've captured cities over the pop limits that didn't have aqueducts/hospitals/rivers/whathaveyou. I seem to recall destroying them via bombardment, too.

Maybe some research into this is called for. Not that I'm volunteering...

I usually sell off all barracks 1 turn before Sun Tzu. I've been doing that for the (minimal) amount of gold it gets me. I remember trying to sell pre-existing barracks long before PtW and it thinking it wasn't possible. Did something change in PtW or C3C?

I usually sell the barracks off as well.

i've never found that recycling bonus to be that beneficial. hmm

Support Apolyton, buy Civilization III: Complete

Well maybe someone can come up with a save to end the debate.
All I can say is I never saw a city lose either, once they aquired one. Every Metro I ever captured had one in it and that is a hell of a lot of metros.
