i like the dual-duel format, even if it means war. however, i dont like the way the result is evaluated, with the first to win a game winning the match which means the more aggressive player will win.

i, for my part, dont have a problem with chance benefitting one player (as long as it is really random which one ), as that makes for interesting adaption effects and is compensated in the long run anyway. randomness is part of all things, so ...

actually, there is one more:
playing with as many civs as possible (usually 8) and seed the players on 6th and 8th place. this way, both will have equally bad starting positions. 
of course, 7 and 8 are possible too, but then you risk being systematically neighboured instead of having a rather random distance.
