IBM is one of the most prominent supporters for sending jobs overseas, but even they are creating significant net positive jobs in the field in 2004.

I think I'll be looking for academic jobs next year. If that doesn't pan out I'm sure I can find something else interesting to do.

Not that I'd like to work.....

Undergraduate degrees aren't worth that much anyway. You should see some of the clowns that get them.

As GePap said, you are better off going to grad school for a couple of years. Grad school is the new "university". And if you're any good, you can get paid to do it.

Philosophers are employed in all sorts of fields. One of our old grads is the President of some huge Canadian bank (I forget which one). Mind you I'd rather shoot myself in the head than work in a bank.

A technical degree doesn't make you anything more than a glorified mechanic.

Any graduate degree is pretty good - it puts you in the top 5% of the population. And with the dumbing down of the university system it actually counts for something.

You are confusing a technical degree with a technical diploma, my dear.

And I don't see how a philosophy degree makes you any more than a glorified homeless bum...

I winked in the first line of that post asking to meet him up for drinks.

The last thing I'd want to do is traumatize myself for life by meeting the 'tard.

A thesis. Should be finished soon. And then it's the fun of the academic job market. I'll probably have to take on a couple of contract jobs before I can get a tenure track job. The market isn't too bad right now as a lot of people are retiring and every department needs a Platonist.

Still, it's not a done deal. Our specialist program has a pretty good placement record. The last few graduates all have good jobs.

If I can't find a decent academic job, I'll probably try law. A law Degree/PhD seems like a reasonable resume to me. I'm only doing the PhD because I don't have to pay for it and it was a good chance to get out of NZ.

+ a lump sum scholarship payment every year. It's not a bad deal - I was offered a heap more money in the States, but I liked the program here better.

Still, being paid to do what you really like is cool.

Refinement is never taught in courses. It's always taught by your peers.

But it's likely that the obnoxious techie rich will remain gauche for the rest of their lives, as they spent all time with enriched geeks like them

We seem to be doing OK.

I don't think I'd want to grow soybeans, but we're everywhere now.

Actually, doing phil is really good if you want to be a policy writer. I can't think of another discipline that would be as good.

I've never been in Toronto anyway. I was only trolling Agathon. Besides, my beloved Montreal is full of brown people. What's cool about them is that they don't usually understand racist insults hurled at them in French.

Man I felt really ignorant when I went to Montreal. Even the fresh off the boat immigrants working at McDonalds were bilingual. I guess my five years of Attic Greek wasn't much use there.

I'm cultured and sophisticated, the thing is it's in a different culture and level of sophistication that non-geeks can't appreciate.

"Culture" as in opera and symphonies and drinking with a rugby-loving moron who teaches Philosophy and makes no sense is of no interest to me.

As someone who's in the humanities/social sciences you should realize that not all people share the same ideals.

See, this is the problem with the social science types. You guys use ten words when one word suffices. It's annoying.

Why should I use foreign words and long phrases when one half-word says it all?

I had to read that one. Cultured and sophisticated? Most people are actually interested when I tell them about what I do. It resulted in sex quite a few times when I was younger. Of course, no woman could stand hearing about what you do - it's a good job you're gay.

And I'm not a rugby man either.
