Changing tech research Increase Your PM Length

I have been playing for a long time, but I am beginning to question something I thought I knew:

Is all previous research towards tech A lost if you change to tech B, complete it, then return to tech A?

unfortunately yes.

Thus the key is to make a choice and either stay with it or buy from someone else and start a new tech research.

Not only that, merely CLICKING on the tech tree at a different spot than the one you're researching will lose all previous research, even if you click back to the original one before exiting the screen.
