When does the computer halt? It works fine here in winXP (english version tho)

running civ1, I guess your best bet is DOSbox or VDMSound.

Windows xp stops specially when i click 'exit' in the city status tool. But, sooner or later, it crashes anyway in 10 minutes.....

My system: Pentium 500mhz 256 RAM no problems with other programs.

For Father Beast: i'd like you do value judgements about the quality of my questions. I want to play civ for DOS in winxp b'cause i like it more than win version.....or to learn more about computers......or b'cause i want. Only that.

In fact, i can play with DOS version, but very slowly after increase the expanded memory of the system. And I could play without probolems with win98. If somebody knows more about this, i'd be very grateful.

Thanks anyway

Hi velymeo - welcome to 'Poly

Civ is a VERY badly behaved windows program - it hogs system resources - Windows is a VERY badly designed 'Operating System' it too hogs resources.

256Mb is the minimum recommended memory for XP - can you expand this? (Is this a laptop?)

Have you got the latest Indeo and WinG drivers for your system?

Don't worry - we will get you up and running - but we need more information

For Civ 1, then there is a separate forum especially for those who love the oldest version of our favourite game. You should probably ask there as I'm sure that this will have been a common question since the release of XP.
Scroll down the forum list on the front page,a nd you'll see the relevant forum.

This will likely be the issue. As SG1 commented windows is a resource hog, and a P2 500 mhz processor will be working much harder with this operating system than with win 98.

I have a 450Mhz processor with 512Mb & win 2k that runs Ok but still has its hang ups as well, especially when the wonder videos and throne room are turned on. try turning these options off. also make sure you have as few as possible programs running in the background. I'm hoping you're talking about Civ1, cause '2 has been amazingly stable on my system, and I'm running Windows ME...

Stable, yes, no problem. It does hog system resources. Take a look at task manager. Few native resources just means fewer open programs. Make sure, as SG[1] said, to get the latest support drivers.

Hope you get things up and running soonest so the fun can begin.

I apologize if I have caused offense. I meant that my question about which version you use was stupid, not your question about getting it to work.

Of course, I do prefer the warrior pic for civ1/dos, as opposed to the "bug" in civwin and civnet.

and there are some edit programs that don't work for the win version.

A 500 mhz should EASILY run civ2, no matter how many resources it "hogs".

Put an end to popups!

I agree, Hagbart; that's why I reemphasized looking into the driver area.

@velymeo

When you installed the Gold edition did you use a separate folder?? Have you tried reinstalling the game?? Have you gotten the latest patch for the game?? Check the title bar when you click on game options.

Avatar Enlargement: We've got the solution

Thank you very much for everybody!!!

Now, i can play civ1 with a DOS emulator, and after changing the memory configuration of WinXP.

About civ2, i'll try it reinstalling winxp and overview the 'video system', but after a few days (i'm enjoying civ1 and i'm very busy!!!)...and after taking note of all you good advices!!

For Father Beast: i don't know where you are, but here that's a signal of...well, it isn't a good signal, next time be more carefuly with people of other cultures ;-))

Thank you for everybody again.

Can I suggest that you reinstall Civ 2 MGE and see what effect that has before taking the rather drastic step of reinstalling XP. I had to do that the weekend before last, and it's a big pain in the civ, as Father Beast would have it. See what happens with Civ 2 first, and only then reinstall XP.

And don't be offended by Father Beast. It was a simple misunderstanding, but the regulars of this forum are jolly nice people on the whole, and wouldn't go in for intimidating people. Other forums here however......

About your civ2 problem, here's another thread that might help some:
http://forums.civfanatics.com/showt...&threadid=20703

As duke said, you might to try out a few more things before taking the drastic step of re-installing XP.
