I still dont get the attraction to the "goth" look, and to an even lesser extent why that look is named after a ancient civilization that walked around in bear skins toating swords and spears.

I think it is rather named after the "gothic" architecture of cathedrals, i.e the standard architecture during the middle ages, at the epitome of Christian mythology, in which current-day goths are interested.
