There is a 1.18 patch that is not officially available. I'm not bothering with it.

Uhm, the patch being out end of February is very old news. Shortly after that Firaxis stated that this date is not valid anymore due to some Atari related issues if I remember correctly.
Seems like most of you forgot.

Yes, my mistake sorry. But Risa posted an intriguing comment a few posts later about it being "just a few more days", giving the impression its coming soon and some people know more than they're saying. Anyway, let's wait and see - 1.15 is certainly adequate to play for the time being.

I'm willing to wait a few more months for the patch if it means the difference between a patch that's sort of
"here it is, ... thank you and come again" (we're done supporting this game) patch with very little fixed.

vs. one that is thoroughly tested and fixes a lot more of the stuff on Alex's list of bugs, AI issues, and altered priorities for some of the units. Especially the submarine starting wars thing. And AI's naval bombad priorities focusing too much on units and not on destroying tile improvements like it used to do.

Well 1.15 is playable, aside from a few relatively minor bugs. The most important thing was to get a patch out quickly the fix the game breaking bugs, which they did.

Hopefully some AI tweaking and balance changes will make their way in to later patches.

It would be a shame if 1.15 is the final product.

1.15 is not the final product. I guarantee you that.

I don't think 1.18 is either, for that matter.

1.15 beta is definitely not the final product.

I got the impression from the early beta patch discussion that many were waiting for the non-beta patch. If that is the case I urge you to install 1.15 beta, which has proven stable, and so much better than the out of the box version. It's also much easier to install than the earlier beta updates.

You just don't know whether the official patch will be out tomorrow or in a month or more. In the meantime playing with the gpt and FP bugs is senseless IMO.

You can always install another version of Civ3 and patch that if you are concerned.

Definitely second what DrSpike said. 1.15 made the corruption tons better. I'm still adjusting to the new functionality of the FP, but I was never very good at FP placement anyway. 1.15 fixed the hugest bugs and I haven't noticed/heard about it introducing any new gamekillers.

If you just can't stand using something that says "beta" on it, I can understand that, but if you're hating C3C because of the FP and GPT bugs or have gone back to PtW, it might be worth the second install. Besides, if you follow the instructions it is registered in the "Add/Remove Software" control panel app in windows, so you can uninstall it if you don't like it.

I play with the 1.15b patch, but I would have to point out that there were some fixes/improvements to the AI and Barbarian activities in PTW which were not included in C3C. So until we see what the next patch brings, some gameplay elements are still better in PTW.

You are correct about that, JimMac. The barbs are sorely missing the PtW "smartness".

Personally, the added "stuff" in C3C(not the scenarios, I'm an epic player) outweighs dumb barbs and the AI is definitely not "sophisticated" in any version of C3. That's just my opinion - I'd rather play with the new civs and traits than have non-zombie barbarians.

Good points though.

P.S. One major annoyance of the C3C AI - no Armies. It seems to always prefer to rush an improvement.

I moaned about the barbs when C3C came out and even made a thread. But in the end, it is not important as the barbs are not really a factor at Emp or less.

They do not need to be smart at Sid as they are tough enough and will attack you. Conscripted warriors can kill elite archers quite often. The loss of barb bonus makes them a threat.

You will not be sending that lone regular warrior over to smash barb camps any longer, unless you are fond of losing units.

You in fact will not pop huts unless you can get a terrain bonus.
You will want a 2 move unit take can back away from the area.

At least that is my experience.

Actually, barbs are usually easier at Sid because the AI kills them all (assuming you share a landmass with an AI).

What bothers me the most about the C3C AI is that they irrigate grassland in Despotism.

Yeah, but what if your not a Sid level player? I play at Regent/Monarch levels and many times have experienced bunches of Barbs sitting around doing nothing, rather than attack my poorly defended units or cities. (BTW I modded Barbs to be 3-1-1 archers and 3-1-2 horsemen) Yet, when I played PTW they were always good at harassing, and causing me proper annoyance!

Fair point, but there is another AI settings which rivals that for me -the bombard preference. It used to really cause me problems in PTW when they targeted my resources, now they waste their time on units in cities which heal next turn. (And don't get me started on the silly increase in aggression level in the AI civs in multiplayer which causes them to commit suicide... )

Yup they behave very timidly at those levels.

Yes the AI will wax them at Sid, but like you said, only if they are close enough to do you any good. Chances are if they are that close, you have other problems.

It is those huts that are near the start that are no longer so appealing.

Of course any island starts can leave you on your own.

Could you please update me telling if the final patch has been released and if so how does it work and what's its name and where to download it ?

Thanks a lot in advance

I am really shocked to understand that the final patch February deadline scheduled 2 months ago has been sacked in a so easy way promising also to wait further weeks.

Besdie beeing disappointed from the huge delay I am also wondering which is the reason for this failure.

I admire your calm.

At the beginning of January several patches were floating around,so many patches that confusion among players was clearly felt and witnessed from dozens dedicated threads in this forum too.

During Beta , Alpha patches production on early January there were also rumors about a concrete possibility to develop Civ 4 but, despiting these events , a thing was sure,to release a golden patch within February 2004.

If they scheduled a so far date I am quite astonished now they have revolutioned from scratch their strategies just to please customers adding new features and doubling the months dedicated for tests.

It sounds me quite strange indeed, even if the possibility that Fireaxis did that it is not to discard, but I am still waiting my non-beta patch.

I must have misread it, but I understood the February date to the the "at the earliest" target, not a hard target.

I'll have to go back and reread Jesse's posts to be sure though.

Aside from that, 1.15b is pretty damn solid, fixes the FP/Corruption bug and fixes the GPT bug, the two biggest problems, along with some other things. If you are still playing the release version, well, then, I'd be frustrated too. If you simply refuse to play at all until there's a final patch, I admire your commitment. I'm far too addicted to C3 and far too happy with 1.15b not to play and have a blast with it. Unless you are beta-phobic, I would definitely give 1.15b a chance. You could always uninstall it if you don't like it.

But still, I was under the impression that Feb was an optimistic, "at-the-earliest" date, not a commitment. I'm off to reread Jesse's posts now.

EDIT: The only thing I can find that sounds even semi-authoritative is in the C3C Patch Location thread where sabrewolf says:
quote:
btw: the next patch mid january will be beta too according to jesse smith (see about 10 posts above). the first official patch will also be the final one a will come out around Q2/2004...

I'm not saying it's not out there, just that I can't find anywhere that Jesse commits to a February release of the "final" patch. Even sabrewolf's post says Q2 - not month 2, quarter 2, so April, May, June. Still, it's not "from the horse's mouth", so take it with a grain of salt unless you have a link to Jesse commiting to Feb.

EDIT2: Ok, I found it. For some reason, the "Patch Info and Plans" thread by Jesse isn't topped. So in mid January, he did say he was planning on a end-of-Feb "final" patch release, but I'm not sifting through all the other search results for "JesseSmith" to see if he amended that at a later date.
