Got spare money?

It is perceptions. I am griping with just a large map in my system which as a raptor drive and 1GB mem. I just expect no delays at all and you will get some on any system.

I two usually do not have other things running, but when I come to the net, I will open a few things.

Full PM-box? Change here!

Well, I've got two systems.... An ancient obselete, defective, last of the class IBM laptop, 400 Celeron or so, and 64k RAM. That's what I've run it on for a long time... My other system is a 2.66 with 512, but want to get some more speed, both kinds, because my graphic games use all the space they can get... thinking dual Xeons.

You're all lucky g*its (except Arrian). I've got 1.4Gz Athlon, 256Mb DDRram, but the graphics is on board. (Probably) doesn't matter for civ, but other 3D games? No chance

No, it does matter. I figure why my 2 CPU was so slow when I played CivIII 1.07f (with 2 CPUs and 1.44G 512M) was because the graphic was onboard (Intel Server Motherboard). Especially when scrolling.

If you have a non AGP card that could put more on the bus. If your card needs more cpu cycles it will slow it down.

So if you have a good card it will put less of a load on the CPU.

One odd thing I've noticed is, and this is for at least back to PTW, that if I have any internet explorer browser windows open, it takes forever to exit the game, system just hangs for a while.(1.7ghz 768 rdram) if no ie windows are open, it exits immediately. Anybody else noticed this, I saw Bongo did I think, but not sure of the IE correlation.

Put an end to popups!

I had not noticed it, but I have not exited the game in days. I just leave it up, even when I go to bed.

asleepathewheel , I haven't looked for an IE correlation but I will next time I play.

Normally there is a lot of starting and exiting the game when I play. As I take part in several demogames/PBEMs I need to jump between c3c and PTW, I also want to have IE at hand for turn-reports, instructions etc.

Ok just for sleepy I exited the game. It had about 2 seconds where the IE window was not avilable (grayed). Then things were normal.

ie + civ used to slow my system, especially when the IE process was running for extended periods of time

http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox

is a perfect replacement for IE. I keep civ running with keepres on and the mozilla browser for days without ever experiencing any system lag

Inflate your Upload Space

It is not lag I fear, but rather hackers. I disconnect as soon as I am done. No leaving IE up fo rme.

yeah, and thats another reason why I don't use IE anymore. There's so many exploits for that browser. You can get hacked through a pop up and you wouldn't even know it.

The question is why the firaxis programmers need to check if IE is active or not before exiting the game (or while the game is on???) ? For what reason?
BTW, this is something new for me, and thanks for the advise.

Enter the AD-FREE zone

My guess is that one resource hog is all my system can handle. Civ3 is okay, IE is okay, civ3+IE is one too many.

Time to look at alternatives...(to IE not Civ )
Opera should also work fine....

Tired of ads?

I want to thank whoever made this thread! This sounds really stupid, but I never knew you could turn off watching the computer move! I've been playing for a long time, and in all the games I ever played, I just accepted it as the only way it could be.... The topic creator said something about automating everything except battles, so I actually.. *gasp* looked at the prefrences and saw that you could let it do it all at once, instead of acting it out. Thanks again!
