Workers till the land, and when they run out of stuff to do (or when you produce them for this purpose...) you can add them to cities for an insta population boost!

By that logic, it's the settler. The workers have nothing to improve land for or to add themselves to when the job is done without settlers.

Right now I would still say the settler; we have a lot of land to REX in the post-war era, and the job is still only half done. Once that is done, the immediately best unit would be the worker.

Toss up between Elite Knight and Worker, really. It largely depends on the situation.

Right NOW, I'd have to say Worker, but that situation will become different as more tiles become improved and GWT becomes less distracted with CGN. Eventually, knights/cavalry will become our most valuable units. After that, riflemen/infantry will be, while knights/cavalry will go obsolete. A tough call, overall. A lot depends on timing.

There is no "best" unit. Each has a function and a price for that function.

Best unit right now? The Elite Knight.

Each unit clearly has it's purpose, but an elite knight is far more expensive in shield or gold cost and more difficult to aquire (we have to constantly fight barbs to get them their experience) than a worker, which is a mere 10 sheilds and pop point.

Furthermore, Elites give us GL opportunities. A GL changes the nature of the game immeasurably.

In the current state of play however, with no Elite Knight in a position to get us a CHANCE of a GL for some dozens of turns at least, I don't think it's one of those.

I thought this poll was aimed at which unit was the MVP for our civ. Which has killed the most barbs, dealt to the most enemy troops and survived, and which has travelled the Empire at the Consuls' slightest whims? That might be a neat poll....

Workers, workers, yet more workers to get that jungle down, and the odd settler to start new cities as there are profitable tiles to work.

Last I looked, E-T was doing a good job of keeping the workers up with new settlements. Has that changed?

Although, I'm not quite sure as to the purpose of this poll, atleast, I would have made it a multiple choice....

I put down the worker, for they have been with us from the start and have done a fantastic job of clearing a very large quanity of our Jungle. And they stay with us until the end.

* E_T wonders if everyone had noticed how little of the jungle is left in our current cultural borders??

The settlers are transitory (unless we specifically have one set up for war fort city builds). They get to their new sites and build the cities...

The Elite Units are also Transitory, as times change and Units come and go. We are working at getting more Elite Knights, by having them do the barb hunting, but with the REX soon to be completed, that will remove the Barbs from play for this purpose (and for extra cash).

Best for what? For killing enemies? For growing cities? For ultimate victory? For queue monopolization? Hard to imagine this is an official poll when it is so vague.

The secret here is balance. Yes we need workers, yes we need defenders, yes we need mobile attack units. But to build one unit to the exclusion of all others, even for a short period of time, is playing with fire.

Look no further than the example of Spain in the PtWDG - we devoted ourselves too completely to REX and improvements, neglecting military units too long.
