Need Help wit Error Support Apolyton, pre-order Civilization IV

I have a very great Problem with CTP2.
After round 450 or later my savegames crashes when i try to load them. I use the original unmodded german version of CTP2, i think its version 1.2 . My Operating System is Windows XP Professional and the system a AMD Athlon 2400+ with 512MB Ram and a Radeon 9500Pro.
When i debugg the error i get an errormessag i try to translate in English:
unhandled Exception at Ox00000000 in ctp2.exe:
oxC0000005 (Zugriffsverletzung in German in English i think it is) Access Error or Acces injury - Read Position: Ox00000000

If it is CTP2 then it is version 1.1 otherwise it is CTP1. For CTP2 we are working on version 1.2.

In English it is Access Violation by the way for German-English, English-German word translation this online dictionary is very usefull: http://dict.leo.org

Unfortunatly this error message is very common, it just says that some $*!# happened. Another possibilty would be of course Win XP , but maybe on my computer the save game would crash, too. So next time I also should provide the debug exe that would at least provide some valuable debug information.

Support Apolyton

Usually, a "Read Position: 0x00000000" access violation indicates that the program has attempted to dereference a Null pointer. This is something you can not change without modifying the program, unless you know the specific actions that cause it, and you just avoid those actions.

Fortunately, we now have the source code, and may be able to do something about it. Actually, we have repaired a number of occurrences of this type of crash already. See e.g. a post with a fixed Null pointer derefence.

The current playtest release does not have support for save files of version 1.1 yet (only for the unpatched 1.0), but this will probably be added to the next release.

So, don't throw away your save file yet . Or - even better - upload and post it for us to test. Maybe it is something we haven't found yet.

Tired of ads?

Hey Thanks for the Help.
In XP it doesn´t work at the moment.
With Windows ME it works if i save at the beginning of the turn and don´t overwrite a save.

Suffering from ads?

Your error message is unfortunately very common under Win XP, when I turn on my computer after a night's rest I have a blue screen every morning, I have to reset my computer for it to boot up adequately.

It seems to be somehow linked to the ATI graphic cards (I have a 128 Mo Radeon 9200) and the various solutions given by Micro$oft are not very easy to implement for the amateurs like me.

I have read that many problems are occuring because the SoundBlaster audio card and the ATI cards are sharing the same IRQ and that these same problems can thus be solved through the BIOS as many Motherboards' BIOS are allowing you to assign a specific IRQ to the Graphic Card... which is unfortunately not the case with my ASUS A7V133-C.
