CLEARWATER, Fla. -- Phillies first baseman Jim Thome broke the middle finger on his right hand during fielding drills and probably will miss the remainder of spring training.
Thome sustained the non-displaced fracture when a fungo hit by coach Charlie Manuel took a bad bounce on Friday at the Phillies' spring-training facility. Other teammates were playing the Yankees in Tampa at the time.
"If this is going to happen, I'm glad it happened now," Thome said. "It's disappointing, but I can't dwell on it.''
X-rays taken Saturday morning confirmed the injury, which was believed to be limited to the tip of the finger. Thome flew to Philadelphia later Saturday to have the finger examined by a specialist.
He is expected to be sidelined for a minimum of three weeks, but Thome was optimistic he would be ready for the first game of the season on April 5 in Pittsburgh.
"Absolutely, I'm hoping to be there Opening Day," Thome told MLB.com. "I'm shooting for the end of spring training, hopefully."
Thome hit. 266 with 47 homers and 131 RBI last season, his first with the Phillies after leaving the Cleveland Indians and signing a six-year, $85 million contract. |

I can only assume LoA lost internet connection after "picking" Boone because it would take a very discourteous person to make us wait hours while he posts jokes.
