The "special case" is that the city has a Wonder in it.

RAH, so far as I know, this is completely straightforward. If a city is listed in the Wonders F7 or the Biggest Cities F8, I guess the game treats it as such a famous city that everyone knows where it is. You can use Find City, and it will be listed, even if you've never found it. And if you click on the city on that list, the map will center on it, even if it's centering on an entirely black screen for you. And then if you right-click on the center of the screen, you'll have coordinates that are pretty much accurate. Is that what you've tried and found not to work?

Yes, I've just verified SG's findings in SP in MGE. Wonder cities are on the list, Top 5's are not. I'm sure I was confused by the fact that after a certain point, Top 5 cities usually have Wonders in them. Don't know what's up with your game, RAH. Have you tried it in SP in MGE?

This and the following quote from debeest were new to me...

Very cool, actually. I am continuously amazed at the nuggets of knowledge that keep turning up. SG[1] and debeest verified this for SP under MGE. After a longish search of old saves, I found a verifying instance for SP under classic Civ242. Same thing; wonder cities but not Top 5. I attach the save.
So, rah, perhaps you should try a reinstall of the game, if you can't get these results under SP. In multiplayer mode, for PC, maybe this element/bug/feature was removed.

Top 5 cities:
I think they are evaluated like your Civ2 final score (happy citizen=2 points, content=1, wonder=20 points; see Info:Statistic thread). If 2 cities have an exact number of points the the older one is higher in the list.

I'm fairly certain that for the Top 5 Cities calculation, Wonders contribute 10 points, not 20.

Once you have the "longitude" (X coordinate) pretty close, you can use the other black-clicking trick and do left-right clicks to find a tile where it does not recenter - this will be the city site. This works even for cities near the poles.
