Regarding the Off-Topic forum:
About a week ago I started a thread whose title included the word 'hell'. This is NOT a swear word. The word was edited out of my title; this removed from the value of the thread.
Later in the week, threads were started with the words '****er' and 'dickhead' in the titles. These are much stronger words in anyone's language.
I'm not bothered that these latter words were not moderated. What bothers me is that an innocent, inoffensive word for the vast majority is edited out. I simply do not see the reason for it.
The word 'hell' should not be removed due to pandering to the intolerant American 'God Squad' religious right, who constitute a tiny minority of Apolyton visitors.

We never seem to have the time until we waste it. All gone, goodbye... Think and think alike, never seemed to have the time until one day it's all gone, you've thrown it all away.
Save Trappist! We shall never forget!

If you were in that "tiny minority", as you put it Iain, you would be annoyed if we did not edit out that word and even more annoyed if we reversed our decision on the practice.
The word 'hell' will continue to be edited out for those who find the word offensive.

Surely the majority, who do not find this word in the slightest offensive, should take priority over the 'tiny minority'?
Anyway, thanks for clarification that the tiny Religious Wrong still hold sway over the rest of us.

Well, if anyone really has to swear, then there are ways around it. If you can be bothered going to the trouble of doing something like edit me then the swearing you use is shown. And it stops people from using it inappropriately.

"Anyway, thanks for clarification that the tiny Religious Wrong still hold sway over the rest of us."
You are making a moutain out of a mohill.
I did not say that they were taking priority/have sway over "the rest of" you. By your saying "Religious Wrong", that is YOUR opinion -- it is also the opinion of this group that the word "hell" is offensive. We cannot cater to everyone's likes/dislikes, but we try.
Besides, you could type "he11" (two lower-case L's) instead, and still get your point across, but please do not go overboard in its use. Most of the time you can easily substitute in another word.

I still cant understand as Iain asked why certain words referring to mastrubation are seemingly ok but a word out of the bible isnt, are yuou going to start removing other biblical words like Jesus , God, Heaven ??? I beleive you should stick to deleting and/or censoring the real swear words not words such as Hell !!! IMHO

I'm perfectly aware that you can't please all of the people all of the time, but surely in an issue like this it is better to please the majority? May I also say that I agree completely with Rasputin's point.

If you won't mind a bit criticism Dan, I think you're -slightly- twisting some proportions here. On the Off-Topic you have allowed three thousand posts by a person calling himself "Albert Speer", and we've seen another poster blaming the "faggots" for the world's problems on more than one occasion. If you really want to keep offensive things of the board, you ought to look at those instead
<img src=/forums/"/images/blue1.gif" width=100% height=1></font></td></tr></table></center>on the case of Speer, I dont recall the last time I got a mail from someone complaining about it. I also dont recall reading someone post on the forums complaining that we let Speer post...
Also, please be more precise on the other case you mention

Are Biblical words swear words or not, surely you must answer no!!!
I for one dont get offended at anyones use of language around me, but I realise this is your site, so their is no such thing as free speech, but surely in the interests of reality , you should stick to censoring offensive words not Biblical words....

I don't recall anyone complaining about the word 'hell' either... although I can't claim to see the mail of the administrators , but no-one has ever complained on the forum.

The swearing standards here are great if you're British. You can get away with all those fabulous Anglo-Saxon favourites that Americans don't understand.
I, personally, claim responsibility for introducing hordes of impressionable young Americans to the expression "ponce".

markg, i hate to be a little obvious, but methinks you are overlooking the recent 2page debate about albert speers' handle under 'speers handle' which i believe you posted on. i haven't seen the guy blaming the faggots, but i do remember posting on speers handle, and seeing as i registered last month, i think you should be able to 'recall' it.
i'd also like to add my vote to the overwhelming list of people that remain in the list to allow swear words that aren't exactly swear words ie. he11, damm, especially when ""sexually offending"" word are being used continuously

sammyboy7, the thread you are talking was created exactly because of the post of mine that you responded
as for certain words like the ones you mentioned, there is a separation between using them in thread titles, using them in posts. I believe Ming explained our position in the best way earlier...

Okay, the pun was a little much. But MarkG, don't you think the smiles legend extention is a good idea? That way the potty-mouthed-poets would be given a challenge at making creative swears and really show us the joy of cursing.

If we had such smilies, some may see it as an excuse or reason to curse even more through the use of such smilies.
