The Official Quote Suggestion Thread Support Apolyton buy from Amazon

Some of you Apolyton old-timers will still remember this from the early days of Apolyton: There used to be quotes accompanying the "Thanks for posting your message" screens.

Now, Markos decided that he wants to start this great tradition all over again... 3 quotes have already been entered... It's up to you to suggest other ones.

So, in this thread you are invited to suggest quotes (preferably civ-related!), which can be used to accompany one of the three "Thanks for posting your message" screens (for the post reply, post new topic and edit your message "thank you" screens, each of which will have its own quote)

The intention is that each of these 3 quotes will be changed regularly (once a week or less often than that, depending on the fact if there's time available to change it)

Thank you, start the suggestions please... Markos will decide which quotes to use.

Civ related? I've been seeing Shakespeare quotes instead. "Great men......" (Went back to the regular screen too fast)

Edit: Does editing do that too?

"Be not afraid of greatness, some are born great...."

I've copied a quote!
Need to find some more...

In that case, we have a barrage of quotes to choose from! You could start with some SMAC quotes. If it is possible to have different quotes at different forums, it would be great to read a SMAC quote every time I post to Apolyton section. But because it probably isn't possible with the current system, you could use some of the most Civish quotes, eg:
<center><table width=80%><tr><td><font color=000080 face="Verdana" size=2><font size="1">quote:

Some quotes by George Orwell:

  • In a time of universal deceit, telling the truth is a revolutionary act.
  • You have to be an intellectual to believe such nonsense. No ordinary man could be such a fool.
  • Who controls the past controls the future. Who controls the present controls the past.
  • We have now sunk to a depth at which the restatement of the obvious is the first duty of intelligent men.
  • On the whole, human beings want to be good -- but not too good and not quite all the time.
  • The quickest way of ending a war is to lose it.
  • It may be just as possible to breed a race of men with no desire for liberty as it would be to create a species of hornless cow.

You can use them all except from the first that belongs to my sig. (I love this grin )

Who controls the past controls the future. Who controls the present controls the past.

This is a misquote, it's He who controls the past controls the future. He who controls the present controls the past.

As for quotes, please let's not do political ones or blatantly ideological ones, like Bill3K's suggestion. A few of my own, courtesy of the greatest comic strip of all time:

The purpose of writing is to inflate weak ideas, obscure pure reasoning, and inhibit clarity. With a little practice, writing can be an intimidating and impenetrable fog!

Well, it just seemed wrong to cheat on an ethics test.

Some people are pragmatists, taking things as they come and making the best of the choices available. Some people are idealists, standing for principle and refusing to compromise. And some people just act on any whim that enters their heads. I pragmatically turn my whims into principles!

Sometimes I think the surest sign that intelligent life exists elsewhere in the universe is that none of it has tried to contact us.

Why waste time learning, when ignorance is instantaneous?

If something is so complicated that you can't explain it in 10 seconds, then it's probably not worth knowing anyway.

I imagine bugs and girls have a dim perception that nature played a cruel trick on them, but they lack the intelligence to really comprehend the magnitude of it.

And these are just a FEW of the gems. The strip is, of course, Calvin & Hobbes.

Oh, and another good Billy quotes (I'd be happy with nothing but Shakespeare quotes as well, we could do 'em for a year, easily):

Out, out, brief candle!
Life's but a walking shadow, a poor player
That struts and frets his hour upon the stage
And then is heard no more: it is a tale
Told by an idiot, full of sound and fury,
Signifying nothing.
-Macbeth, Act V, Scene V, Macebeth

And oh yes, check out http://www.MightyCool.com/quote/ to sign up for some actually pretty good quotes sent to your mailbox each day. If you want more Billy quotes you can search at http://www.cs.usyd.edu.au/~matty/Shakespeare/nsearch.cgi for the exact references and stuff.

Hmph. I see that the Magellan quote made it in. Let me again repeat that I for one wouldn't like to see ideological quotes in there- I mean, it's not that I'm religious that I'm objecting- I agree that the Church was wrong back then too- I just don't think we should be seeing quotes that will be distasteful to some in the list. I would have made the same comment if it had been a pro-religion quote. (not that I think that anything having anything to do with religion or politics should be out of course, but there's plenty of other valid quotes that aren't involved either. There are tons of great Bible quotes that are universal, as there are tons of great, say, Carl Sagan quotes that are also universal).

Increase Your PM Length

Come you masters of war
You that build all the guns
You that build the death planes
You that build the big bombs
You that hide behind walls
You that hide behind desks
I just want you to know
I can see through your masks

You that never done nothin'
But build to destroy
You play with my world
Like it's your little toy
You put a gun in my hand
And you hide from my eyes
And you turn and run farther
When the fast bullets fly

Like Judas of old
You lie and deceive
A world war can be won
You want me to believe
But I see through your eyes
And I see through your brain
Like I see through the water
That runs down my drain

You fasten the triggers
For the others to fire
Then you set back and watch
When the death count gets higher
You hide in your mansion
As young people's blood
Flows out of their bodies
And is buried in the mud

You've thrown the worst fear
That can ever be hurled
Fear to bring children
Into the world
For threatening my baby
Unborn and unnamed
You ain't worth the blood
That runs in your veins

How much do I know
To talk out of turn
You might say that I'm young
You might say I'm unlearned
But there's one thing I know
Though I'm younger than you
Even Jesus would never
Forgive what you do

Let me ask you one question
Is your money that good
Will it buy you forgiveness
Do you think that it could
I think you will find
When your death takes its toll
All the money you made
Will never buy back your soul

And I hope that you die
And your death'll come soon
I will follow your casket
In the pale afternoon
And I'll watch while you're lowered
Down to your deathbed
And I'll stand o'er your grave
'Til I'm sure that you're dead

- Bob Dylan Masters of War

Any verse would be enough and I think you could justify tying any of them to Civ.
