Can we please stop spamming the forum with turnthreads? Help yourself to an AD-FREE life

The reason that the Consuls stopped posting turnthreads weeks and months ahead of when they would be played:

* Posting them in spurts was frankly wasteful of frontpage forum space as doing so bumped IMPORTANT threads off of the front page. This means that a number of people won't even check Page 2 where important threads reside and even more people who do check page 2 without accounting for he stupid forum bug that cloaks threads "in between pages" with miss threads even if they go looking for them.

* No-one posts in the turnthreads ANYHOW until the previous turn has been played. If the MoI or another minster needs to post issues or plans ahead of time, THERE ARE TOPPED THREADS WHICH EXIST FOR THIS PURPOSE. Spamming yet more threads onto the front page is just plain wasteful. Posting 20 threads weeks or months before anyone is going to post in them is just spamming.

* Some of the people who have posted tons of such threads ahead of time (both Consuls and non-Consuls) have not added them to the turnthread index, causing either duplicate threads or us to have to go digging for the one already created since the search function doesn't seem to work.

* Part of the whole point of posting a turnthread is that the Consul who just played the previous turn posts the new thread, adding all of the pertinent info from the save just played and having the new turnthread start on Page 1 without the Consul having to go digging through the bowells of the forum looking for it or making yet another post in a thread served absolutely no purpose until he was ready to start it anyhow.

* Related to what was covered above, future issues can be posted in the TOPPED ministerial threads. The thread shows as having a new post when this happens and we can read it. There is little need for someone to bump a turnthread that won't be played for another 2-3 weeks just to add something (which will likely get missed anyhow if they're just editing an existing post).

So can we PLEASE stop spamming the forum with tons of turns that won't be played for weeks or months from now?

The most important issue is that spamming them on the front page will cause people to miss other threads because of the forum bug. The sheer number of topped or front page threads is a secondary issue by comparison, but still important.

I for one thank roadcage for his willingness to help. If this is such an issue with the current consulship, just asking him to post one at a time, as the current saves are played is fine by me. At least, it will cut down on the "spam" issue...

Look, I thank people from trying to be conscientious and trying to help out. It's just that it doesn't really help.

That's not really their fault, but probably ours for not clarifying the issue sufficiently before. My apologies for that.

I don't see what the big deal is, they get bumped down pretty quick.

I do think however, that TOO many turnthreads is pushing it a bit, perhaps the current and the next 2 is all that is needed.

So roadcage - although we appreciate the effort of helping, the Consuls think it would be a little better to not quite help so much with this. You dig?

So cheers, roadcage, but we should listen to our wisened Consuls.

Tired of ads?

Due to the way that this forum is designed (by the godz), it is effecient to bulk start turnthreads when maintaining the turnthread index.

ET stated the turnthread index because he wanted a place to lay out multiple turns (when he had the time). Apparently, he doesn't use this feature anymore.

So, I am the only one who attempts to maintain the turnthred index. I believe that the turnthread index is a good idea. I will continue to maintain the index so that there is a reasonable supply of future turns at all times. This will result in occasional bursts of turn starts. If one of our consuls, or any other team member wants to take over this task, just say so.

The only spamming I see on the forum is this thread.

Was this first communicated via pm? That seems a more appropriate first step to me.

My only concern with too many threads is/was that some would get lost in the shuffle. Not sure if that is still the problem with the database, but it was very annoying in the recent past.

edit: I see Arne addressed this point as well.

The reason that I had first started the Turnthread Index and having several turns ahead of time, was to have a place to start posting my orders, especially (at that time) when it would take more than a day for a new one to be posted (and several turns of begging them to do it). Also, at that time, I had more free time to work on orders and getting them posted. Things have changed for me somewhat, but I still appriciate the extra turns ahead of time. For one, we don;t know how fast this game might start to turn around now that Miccofl isn't playing the CGN turns (this last turn came much sooner that I had suspected it to).

[EDIT] I still use the Index, because I can quickly call up several turnthreads, even if they have been buried for weeks on end. I can use one main Window for calling everything else up with, and them just close them (instead of backing out) when I'm done with them. It's easier for me and anything that will save me time, will help our nation [/edit]

So, as a Minister Who uses them, I appreaciate the effort that roadcage has shown, because it takes some finite amount of time to even post blank turnthreads and to link them into the index.

* E_T again appludes his effort.

And in a game, where we have vary little in the way of player participation, except for lurking, the Consulate certainly shouldn;t be haranging him publically about this.

umm... some corrections: I note you use the plural in saying that "we" don't want so many turnthreads yet I don't see myself or Trip complaining about this and in fact am happy that someone actually bothers to update the turnthread index.

we've already had enough consul-people problems the last month, the last thing we need is to have all three of us lumped together in criticism of one person's actions.

same goes to you E_T.

This issue needed to be addressed in the open because it keeps coming back up and every time we address it in private, another person comes along and busts it back out in the open because the issue was never handled in the open, but only in private.

So yes, I publicly posted this because I'm tired of coming to agreements with people in private about this and related forum management issues and then having yet more people come along not privvy to that discussion who don't realize that it's been discussed.

We need to handle issues like this PUBLICLY so that everyone agrees (or at least aquieses) to what to do and will respect it. So, you all tell me... which way do you prefer it?

I have my opinion, which is that spamming the forum with tons of threads which never get used until the turn is ready to be played anyhow is utterly pointless and only serves to knock important threads off of the front page. Were the turnthreads posted weeks and months ahead of time actually important and used, that might be a different story.

So if the team has a strong preference one way or the other, please speak up. I'm just tired of people agreeing to do it one way and then someone comes along and does it the other way (which has been happening continuously in both directions). Let's just make a TEAM DECISION about which way to do it and then EVERYONE respect that decision so this doesn't keep coming back up.

Oh, btw... just so that people know, Trip is FAR more annoyed by this than I am. Frankly, in part I'm speaking on behalf of what I find to be an entirely valid complaint of Trip's that he simply hasn't spoken on in the forum.

Frankly, I think we just need to stop people from bickering at each other in private about this, solve the issue publicly, and then just live with whatever is decided. End of story.

I strongly agree, it's very confusing knowing what the current turn is when there's a host of future turn threads out there.

Got spare money?

I'm not sure if it's a HUGE issue but I think we could just cut down on the amount of turnthreads posted at one time.

I lost this battle the last time it came up. I'm more than willing to agree to this if people want it, but the majority around here sided against me last time and I decide to just go with the flow.

Make up your minds, people.
